He garnered numerous award nominations and won Academy Awards for his role in "Mister Rodgers" and "Save the Tiger". He was nominated for his roles in "Some Like It Hot" "The Apartment "Days of Wine and Roses" "The China Syndrome" "Tribute" and "Missing". He played opposite Walter Matthau in "The Odd Couple".</p>

By 1908 he had joined the Geo-Physical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. Dr. Sosman worked at the Geo-Physical Laboratory for 20 years serving 8 years as Assistant Director. During World War I his contributions there were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research. Following his retirement from U.S. Steel in 1947 he became visiting professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sosman was a past president of the American Ceramic Society. In his honor the Society established The Robert B. Sosman Award "the highest recognition of scientific accomplishment given by the Basic Science Division. in recognition of outstanding achievement in basic science of an area that results in a significant impact to the field of ceramics.". Very good. - Typed letter filling most of one side of a cream-colored 7-1/4 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet of "Yale University / Institute of Human Relations" letterhead. Signed "Ralph Linton". There is very light creasing to the top left corner of the letterhead. Folded twice for mailing. Near fine. <p>Linton writes to Harold Rugg of Columbia University's Teachers College gladly accepting an invitation to take part in one of Rugg's lunch-time forums at the college. "As regards what subject to address I think perhaps the most interesting material that I could give would be a report on recent developments in studies of personality and culture; I am still deep in this work and have come a good way from the time when I was working with Kardiner."<p>Abram Kardiner 1891-1981 was a psychiatrist and pioneering psychoanalyst who made major contributions to psychological and psychoanalytic anthropology.<p>Ralph Linton 1893-1953 was a respected American anthropologist particularly remembered for his texts "The Study of Man" 1936 and "The Tree of Culture" 1955. One of his major contributions to anthropology was defining a distinction between status and role.<p>Harold Rugg 1886-1960 was an educational reformer associated with the Progressive education movement. Originally trained in civil engineering he went on to study psychology sociology and education at the University of Illinois. After teaching at the University of Chicago from 1915 to 1920 he took a job at the Teachers College of Columbia University where he stayed until he retired in 1951. From front jacket flap Over the past four decades Joseph V. McMullan has assembled a brilliant eclectic Islamic carpet collection which has received international recognition. The Arts Council of Great Britain exhibited a portion of the McMullan Collection at the Hayward Gallery in London from October 19 through December 10 1972 the first great carpet exhibition in London in forty years. This book documenting the show illustrates in color fifty-four of the most important pieces with descriptions of each by Mr McMullan. David Sylvester who devised and installed the exhibition has written a valuable and lucid preamble describing early carpet collecting and tracing the development of the body of knowledge that fixes carpets in the context of Islamic art. Very good. - An 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide broadside promoting the American lecture tour of the French socialist politician and journalist Jean Longuet under the auspices of James P. Pond of The Pond Bureau. The broadside is illustrated with a black & white portrait of Longuet beneath the banner title subsequent boldly subtitled at right of the image listing the Subjects of the lectures "Political Forces in France / Factors of French Policy / France's Place in the World / Reparations / The Growing Role of Internationalism" and reassures the potential audience that "M. Longuet speaks English brilliantly and is at great ease in that language as his own. He was born in London". Biographical text is printed in a small font below identifying Jean Longuet as a grandson of Karl Marx in addition to his credentials. Folded once horizontally with a tiny chip to the right edge of the fold. There is some minor faint creasing. Very good.</p><p>The French socialist politician and journalist Jean Longuet 1876-1938 was Karl Marx's grandson. Born in London the family frequently visited Marx and subsequently moved to France in 1881. A pacifist during the First World War he was active in French politics especially the French Section of the Workers' International serving as a mayor and a member of the French Chamber of Deputies. He was originally denied a visa to lecture in the U.S. in 1920 due to his politics and being the grandson of Karl Marx. After the French radicals split into 2 parties Longuet divorced himself from the Russian Soviet communists joining force with Leon Bloom and becoming one of the leaders of the Left-Wing Conservative Socialists.
