187034032London: September 23rd circa 1870s. 1870s. Good. - 47 words penned in black ink on a card approximately 3-1/2 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide. Signed "W. Kuhe". The card is lightly soiled & scraps of gray paper adhere to the verso where it has been removed from an album. Good. <p>Apparently in the process of preparing a concert program Kuhe writes to a Mr. Mayer: "I shall put down all three Hungarian songs for Mr. Plunkett Green in a good position with Mr. Baird's name as accompanist. Kindly let me have the words as well as those of Jess Macfarlane at your earliest convenience."<p>Born and trained in Prague Czech pianist William Kuhe 1823-1912 visited England for the first time at the age of 22. Two years later he returned there as accompanist to the great singer Jenny Lind. In 1871 he established the Brighton music festival aiming he wrote "to emulate the example of Mr. Manns at Sydenham and produce whenever the opportunity presented itself works by English composers". A longtime California College of the Arts Graphic Design faculty member 41 years to be exact and professor emeritus Reoutt also was a book illustrator curator painter and genuinely appreciated and loved member of the CCA community. He was born in 1938 in Shanghai to Russian parents. He came to the United States when he was just 12 years old. He went on to cofound the San Francisco chapter of the AIGA including serving a nine-year board position as design historian. In 2001 Reoutt received the AIGA Fellowship award for “personal and professional contributions to raising the standards of excellence within our design community." He passed away May 14 2008.
