Occasionally fading on pages. Otherwise a very good copy. First edition of this extremely rare first science fiction book discusses the biological probability of the possibility of life on planets in the Solar System, with semi-fictional texts, in the light of scientific knowledge at the time of publication. Osman Nuri Eralp was a Turkish veterinarian and microbiologist. Eralp was born in Istanbul in the Ottoman Empire. He completed his university education at "Mekteb-i Tibbiye-i Mülkiye" which was the medical school of Darülfünun [i.e. House of Multiple Sciences, name of Istanbul University in Ottoman era]. To continue studying for a post-graduate qualification, he attended Sorbonne and Pasteur Institute. After graduation, he worked as a veterinarian while continuing his research studies. After the declaration of the Constitutional Regime in 1908, he worked as a full-time academic at Istanbul University and Ankara University. He lectured on histology and embryology. Eralp contributed notably to the field of bacteriology via his research on microorganisms (tuberculosis, anthrax, cholera, syphilis, gonorrhea), and the field of virology by his research on rinderpest. He wrote the first science fiction book in Turkey titled "Baska dünyalarda canli mahlûkât var midir" [i.e. Are there alive creatures in other worlds?]. (Wikipedia). Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original illustrated wrappers. Folio. (33 x 24 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 32 p., richly ills. First published in any form of this symbolist poem, is the manifest of the attempt to settle in New Zealand by falling into pessimism, written during Sultan Abdülhamid II's tyranny period between two Constitutionalist regimes in the Imperial Ottoman, by Servet-i Fünûn literary scene leading of Ottoman poet Tevfik Fikret and his friends like Mehmed Rauf, Hüseyin Kadri, Dr. Esad Pasa, Hüseyin Cahit, Süleyman Nesip, Ahmet Hikmet Müftüoglu. In the westernization period, there is an escape especially the Servet-i Fünuncus to New Zealand, Scotland, and Finland. This escape can be seen as both alienation and help-seeking. Historical point of view, sociological research and in-depth analysis personal sufferings of intellectuals who attempted to escape can provide true findings and information, which can light this period, about the dualism of these intellectuals and their attempts to escape. Tevfik Fikret is one of the pioneers who symbolize this escape. Fikret does not leave the homeland, but in much poetry, he attributes a mission of escape and rescue to places in his poem. Places, where this mission is the most intense, are streets, Asiyan, grave, mosque, Istanbul, the parliament, palace, garden, and village. The first utopian texts in Turkish literature were dreams written in an effort to save the declining Ottoman State. In the period of Servet-i Fünûn [i.e. The Wealth of Sciences], which was a time of crisis, some utopias such as the Yesil Yurt [i.e. Green Land]. Fikret decided to go to New Zealand (after Manisa city) with friends from his literary circle. After a while, he changed his mind and began to construct a special house for his family on the Bosphorus, which he called "Asiyan" (meaning close friends). Asiyan was finished in 1906. New Zealand carries all the characteristics of a utopian place in this poem by Tevfik Fikret. (Utopias from the Middle East 13).

Loose as issued in original printed wrappers bit edge frayed, shelf ticket, old military institutional stamps, contemporary inscription on cover. In a very good condition. ~ First edition. Extremely rare. Inscription in neat contemporary hand at top of cover gives evidence to the fact that this publication was received from the representative of Krupps A.G., the retired Colonel DeFremery (?), on December 14, 1910, by the Commissie van Proefneming, responsible for testing, examining, and recommending artillery material for the Dutch government. With the Commission stamp next to it. The catalogue depicts in excellent photographs the 6.5cm L/35 towed anti-balloon gun, in rest and in full elevation, loaded on onto specially designed gun carrier with built-in folding metal steel ramps; the 7.1cm L/30, wagon-mounted with ammunition storage; and the giant 10.5cm L/35 central-pivot, fixed installation gun in various positions in a series of exquisite studio photographs. Special, extended part is dedicated to a photographic report on the effect of balloon grenades in proof-firing in Meppen. The history of the Ballonabwehrkanone ("Bak") is short and remarkable. At the siege of Paris in 1870/71 the Prussian Army practically failed to engage enemy balloons using conventional artillery which could not be aimed accurately at such high angle. There was a need in a special gun, specifically designed for the purpose, and the Krupp arms manufacturers accepted the challenge. The result were a 6.5cm L/35 gun on wheels and a 7.1cm L/30 car-mounted which could be elevated to fire directly overhead. This was the world's first anti-aircraft gun, a beginning of a field in which Krupp would dominate right into WW II. At the eve of the First World War only a handful guns in the whole German Army were designated as anti-balloon weapons. Almost all were horse-drawn guns that were assigned to protect strategically important locations along the axis of advance in the West. After the outbreak of the war individual weapons were consolidated into sections, and then into platoons and batteries. But few Allied dirigible balloons took to the skies over the front, and in 1916 the "Bak" was renamed "Flak" to represent its new role as anti-aircraft gun. ~ See also: M. Engineer Lieutenant Colonel, Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion, Knight of the Order of the White Falcon, Knight and later Officer of the Legion of Honour, Knight of the Swedish Order of the Sword, Knight of the Order of the Crown Württemberg. Prolific and brilliant writer he wrote extensively on military fortification, engineering and fortress warfare. He died as Mayor of the City of Gendt. It is interesting that his "Verhandeling over het belang der vestingen voor den staat" was published by a small, general publisher, more a bookseller than a publisher. The Bruxelles Bookseller Brest van Kempen was active as a publisher only 9 years (1821-1830) in which period he published 83 books, mostly on politics and law. [NOTE:] First edition of Merkes' "Het beleg van Maastricht in 1579" (Arnhem, 1827) is also available by Librarium.

James Mill (1773-1836), British historian, philosopher, and economist. The first edition of "Elements of Political Economy", "Mill's masterpiece", appeared in 1821. According to his son, John Stuart Mill, it originated in 1819 in instructions given to him by his father during their daily walks. The abstracts of these lessons, prepared by the son, served the father as notes from which to write his book. The work is considered as a summary representation of contemporary theories, in particular those of Malthus and Ricardo. It is said that Mill's principal services to political economy were indirect, among them to have been the father and the teacher of J. S. Mill. Several of the major alterations in Mill's work were founded on criticisms made by his son. (Palgrave. 1894-1901). Kress C.1295. Goldsmith 24051. Einaudi 3893. OCLC 6783509.
