Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original color map. 65,5x63 cm. In Ottoman script. This rare and decorative Gallipoli map including Hellespont, Gallipoli Peninsula, Suvla Bay, Seddülbahir, and Tenedos, the places of Gallipoli Aar in 1915 (Dardanelles Campaign) during World War 1, separated two map views. Seddulbahir and Suvla Bay at north and Straight, Peninsula, and its shores with Tenedos (now Bozcaada) at the southwest of the map. It's a very detailed and rare map printed with the series of "History of the Dardanelles Campaign" after the seven years of war. The Gallipoli campaign, also known as the Dardanelles campaign, the Battle of Gallipoli or the Battle of Çanakkale (Turkish: Çanakkale Savasi, or, Muharebâti), was a military campaign in the First World War that took place on the Gallipoli peninsula (Gelibolu in modern Turkey), from 17 February 1915 to 9 January 1916. The Entente powers, Britain (with Anzacs), France, and Russia, sought to weaken the Ottoman Empire, one of the Central Powers, by taking control of the Turkish straits.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. 439 p. First Edition, thus. This first Turkish translation of Robinson Crusoe made by Sükrü Kaya is produced while the translator was in exile in Malta. With the help of Michael Seidel's argument, for instance, Kaya's translation might be regarded not only as a translation made in the circumstances of exile but also as a translation of what Seidel calls an "exile narrative". This might be the only reason why Kaya decided to translate this novel. It is highly probable that he was feeling depressed and lonely; therefore, he chose to translate the story of a lonely man like himself. Indeed, Kaya declares in the translator's preface to Robinson Crusoe that the activity of translation to an extent made him forget the pain of captivity [= Tercüme mesguliyeti bana esaretin acilarini kismen unutturuyordu]. The first Turkish translation of this novel was made by Ahmed Lutfî and published by Takvimhâne-i Âmire as early as 1864. It was an abridged translation, and an unabridged translation was not made until 1919 when Sükrü Kaya was in exile in Malta. This unabridged translation made by Kaya was published by Tanin Printing House in Istanbul in 1923, and it belonged to -The Collection of Immortal Works- [Ölmez Eserler Külliyati]. Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719) has been attracting the attention of many critics and scholars both in the West and in Turkey for years. Robinson Crusoe was originally written in English, and published on April 25, 1719, and its title was in fact quite long. Robinson Crusoe is among the novels which are argued to be the first English novel. The book has obtained worldwide fame, and there are hundreds of translations and adaptations. Probably due to the success of the first novel, Defoe wrote the second book which is entitled The Further Adventures of Robinson Crusoe. (Sources: THE SHAPING ROLE OF RETRANSLATIONS IN TURKEY: THE CASE OF ROBINSON CRUSOE, Asli Emekçi.; OSMANLICADA ROBENSON, Ayse Banu Karadag). Sükrü Kaya, (1883-1959), was a Turkish civil servant and politician, who served as a government minister, Minister of Interior and Minister of Foreign affairs in several governments. (Wikipedia). First Unabridged Ottoman Turkish Edition. Özege 17028.; TBTK 8228. Only one institutional copy located in OCLC: 949585991 (Bogaziçi University Library).

After graduating from the Agriculture School in Bursa, he continued his education at the Fine Arts Academy. There he studied at Ibrahim Çalli and Hikmet Onat's studios. For a period he attended Andre Lhote and Othon Griesz's studios in Paris. After returning to Turkey he worked as a painting teacher in various cities. He joined "The D Group." His paintings appeared in that groups and Galatasaray exhibitions. He won many awards at State Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions. He also participated in exhibitions at Venice Biennale, Paris (Unesco), San Francisco, and Athens.
Very Good Turkish Original two manuscript ALSs and one manuscript autobiography including 30 lines. 1 p.; 2 p.; 2 p. In Ottoman script. Only one letter with date and letterhead of 'Vecih Bereketoglu'. In his first letter dated April 26, [19]44, he talks about the painting and oil painting he is working on. He states that he has met Fazil Bey since 1923. Another paper includes a two-pages autobiography. Second ALS includes 19 lines. Hasan Vecih Bereketoglu was a Turkish painter, influenced by impressionistic aesthetics, who took painting lessons from Halil Pasha and at the Julian Academy in Paris. He is one of the painters of the 1914 Generation. He was the son of Kazasker Bereketzade Cemil Bey. Since his father was a civil servant, he completed his primary education in Egypt. He completed high school in Rhodes. He studied at Istanbul Darülfunun Law Faculty. He took his first lessons in painting from Halil Pasha between 1916 and 1920. He became one of the names that supported the establishment of the Fine Arts Union. He was in Paris between 1922-1923 and continued at the Art Academie Julian. Upon his return to Turkey in 1923 he became the Chairman of Kadikoy Halkevi. When he moved to Ankara in 1943, he became the Presidential office manager. During these years, he produced still life works. He produced such works by adopting the impressionist understanding of his art life in general. It was seen that he was influenced by Halil Pasha, Hikmet Onat, and Nazmi Ziya Güran in his works on Istanbul. He was mostly remembered as an 'open-air painter' with his paintings with the views of Fenerbahçe, Kurbagalidere, and Göksu. In these paintings, he did not see the light element as the element that determines the color and presented it with the reflection it's created in nature.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original very decorative 1/4 leather bdg. Raised bands, ornaments gilded on four compartments of five. Foolscap 8vo. (17 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script. 173 p. Framed text in a style of early 19th century mostly seen in the transition period from manuscripts to the printing. Slightly faded on boards, stains on margins of two pages. Otherwise a very good copy. Harputî Ishak Efendi was a 19th-century statesman and Islamic scholar in the Ottoman Empire. After completing his first education in his hometown, he came to Istanbul and received a license from "Sahn-i Seman Madrasahs" in Fatih, Constantinople. While teaching in Istanbul madrasas, he taught "huzur dersleri" [i.e. the peace lessons] of Sultan Abdulaziz. He continued these lessons for many years as an educator. During the reign of Sultan Abdülhamit II, he was a commission member in the Ministry of Foundations (Waqfs), as a teacher of junior high, and as a qadi of Isparta and Medina. Harputi Ishak was an accomplished theological instructor and writer. In 1861, he published the Sems al-hakikat against Karl Pfander's ideas. During the 1860s he was a teacher at the prestigious Darü'l-Maarif secondary school. Harputî Ishak then rose within the religious scholarly ranks while an instructor at the Fatih Medrese, and he gained the attention of Sultan Abdülaziz. In the 1870s, he held the position of molla, as he was an instructor at the Darü'l-Maarif, and attained the rank of Istanbul payesi (rank of the qadi of Istanbul). His literary ventures had the official sanction and reflected so-called traditionalist views of Sultan Abdulaziz's administration in contrast to Euro-centric reformers such as Ali Pasha. In 1874, he wrote the Kashifu'l-esrâr ve dafiu'l-eshrar, against Bektashism. On the third page of the work, Ishak Efendi stated that he divided the book into three parts. The first part includes Fadlullah el-Hurufi (prophet, or, leader of Hurufism) and the basic principles of Bektashism, the second part, the criticism of Abdülmecid Firisteoglu's work named Isknâme [i.e. The book of light], and third part, the criticism of the views against religion in Câvidânnâme (The sacred book of Hurufis by their leader, Fazlullah). Ishaq says that all Hurufis and Bektashis are the enemies of Islamic religion in his book, which he describes as Hurufi and attacks in this direction. (Source: AN ANTI-ISLAMIC POLEMIC IN 1878 OTTOMAN ISTANBUL: S.W. KOELLE'S GIDAÜ'L-MÜLAHAZAT, by Scott Rank). It is not known how many copies of the book written by Ishaq were published in any source, but it is known that the readers and the public of the period were influenced by this Sunni-origin counter-discourse. Second Edition. Özege 10358.; OCLC 892728564.; Library of Congress. Karl Süssheim Collection, no. 785.
