Bright and sharp overall.

Promotional flyer executed in Sanders' distinctive FU Press style touting a string of Saturday "dope-grope rock 'n' roll meat-shrieks & rice paddy frenzy" midnight shows at The Bridge Theater on St. Marks following the band's return from their October 1965 Vietnam protest tour. 140939269Detroit: Negro Retail Store Employees Association / The Inner City Organizing Committee. Broadside. Very Good. ca. 1940-1960. Single sheet measuring 9-7/8" x 10 printed on recto only. Top edge rough cut perhaps as issued or with blank margin partially missing. Moderately toned and with a faint vertical crease down the center. Beginning in the 1930s the Don't Buy Where You Can't Work campaign sprung up in northern American cities with black community members protesting against discriminatory hiring practices of targeted white-owned businesses. Such businesses would typically be picketed in order to increase job opportunities and harness the economic power of the community to affect change. This broadside appears to be boycotting three Sears locations in the Detroit area which had "75% negro patronage and less than 10% negro employees in lower paying jobs." Locally this movement was supported by the Detroit Housewives' League activist African American housewives who tirelessly worked to promote black-owned businesses and in turn increase employment opportunities for black workers. 19155685Ensley Alabama: The Church; Printed by Garrison Printer 1915. Octavo 21 x 13.5 cm. 89 i pages. Advertisements. Index and "Index of advertisements." Date of publication estimated from external evidence. Evident FIRST EDITION. A church cookbook from a once independent municipality at the moment of its absorption into greater Birmingham. Nearly three hundred recipes some of them attributed; including: English Currant Bread Poached Eggs with Creamed Celery Fried Okra with Onions Artichoke à la Barigoile i.e. Barigoule Creamed Parsnips Cherry Salad Savory Custard Prune Trifle Chelee Sauce Rhubarb Relish Scuppernong Wine Coffee Jelly Watermelon Preserves. ~ Located at the southern edge of the Pratt Coal Seam Ensley was a planned industrial city built on land acquired by Enoch Ensley 1832-1891 to provide housing as well as communal and commercial infrastructure for workers employed in the coal and iron ore mines of the Tennessee Coal Iron & Railroad Company. Residents' experience in self-governance was short: the city was incorporated in February 1899 but annexed by Birmingham on the first day of 1910. Opposition to the takeover was vigorous - a mock funeral was held and a tombstone laid to commemorate the "euthanized" city - such that the persistence of the community's independent identity works against clarity regarding the appearance of the St. John's Cook Book. Advertisements for two theaters equipped to exhibit silent films place the range of dates across the annexation divide: both - that for the Belle Theatre on page 2 and that for the Franklin Theatre on page 28 - announce adherence to guidelines set forth by the National Board of Censorship a name for what became the National Review Board in use only between late 1909 and 1915. ~ The history of Episcopalians in Alabama cannot be separated from the history of advocacy for slavery nor from the influential tenure of the Confederate episcopate of Richard Hooker Wilmer 1816-1900 an ardent proponent of secession. Unlike Methodists Baptists and Presbyterians Episcopalians did not divide over issues surrounding abolition. While their numbers declined in the later nineteenth century - Wilmer though under house arrest for demonstrations of hostility against the United States president was still permitted to serve as bishop - they retained the loyalty of landholders and industrialists. Thus the upper echelons of Ensley grew sufficiently to merit the establishment of a parish which was admitted into the Diocese in 1898 just before formal incorporation of the city. Images of the church for which funds were raised by the Ladies of St. John's are not listed among the archival holdings now deposited at the Birmingham Public Library. The brick complex that stands at the site today on Ensley West Avenue was built in 1951. The parish having dissolved in 2000 this building was listed for sale in 2016. ~ One abrasion along fore-edge of text block. Stapled in publisher's green wrappers titled in black over brown cloth. Some soiling and a small tape repair to lower edge of front wrapper. Duplicate front wrapper bound in. Scarce. OCLC locates one copy; Cather Fifty Alabama Cookbooks 20; not in Cook Brown or Cagle. Stone has crossed out "The Cloister" and written above it "Cottage 71." Signed in ink "Harlan F. Stone" at bottom of the verso. Very Good.

"Dear Tinker It was good to have your letter which followed us when we came here a week ago Sunday. They took me to the train in a wheelchair but now thanks to the balmy climate I am walking. I walked two miles. We shall unwind probably until late Jan and then return to my sadly interrupted job.
"Sorry you could not make your trip to Pasadena. It would have been a pleasant change for you both. I enjoyed your tale of Mr. Pal and Shaw. Have you heard of the elderly spinster who attended a party when each guest was to dress so as to indicate the title of a book. Across her lower front was a placard ------ . The answer of course was It Cant Happen Here. Our best regards to you and Frances. Let us hope that the new year will be a better one for all of us and that we shall meet soon.
As ever your friend
Harlan F. Stone"

Harlan Fiske Stone 1872-1946 was appointed to the Supreme Court as an Associate Justice by Calvin Coolidge and served as such from 1925 to1941 when Franklin Roosevelt appointed him Chief Justice a position he occupied until his death in 1946. Stone had been ill sometime around December1936 and had traveled to Sea Island Georgia to recuperate. A report in January 30 1937 stated that he had returned to Washington fully recovered. His correspondent was Edward Larocque Tinker 1881-1968 a writer concentrating on Latin American culture. Both men were graduates of Columbia Law School Stone in 1898 and Tinker in 1902. After Stone graduated the school asked him to remain as a teacher; he did so while maintaining a private law firm. In 1910 the law school named Stone its Dean a position he held for fourteen years. Tinker likely knew Stone both as a student and fellow teacher. "It Can't Happen Here" mentioned in this Letter refers to the 1935 novel by Sinclair Lewis. 1851009695The Drake Brothers & Co.of Havana Cuba to Magoun & Clap of Bath Maine: The Drake Brothers & Co 1851. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This two-page bi-fold printed circular measures 8.25" x 11". It is datelined "Havana 8 May 1851" and signed in print by the Drake Brothers. It is addressed to a merchant in Bath Maine and bears to postal handstamps a straightline "PRINTED CIRCULAR" in black and a large bold "6" in red. In 1847 the U.S. established a rate of three cents for loose printed matter originating in the West Indies and given to the purser or mail agent aboard a contract steamship. If addressed beyond the U.S. port of arrival the "printed matter" delivery rate of three cent was added resulting in a total cost of six cents to mail this circular.

The circular is in nice shape with original folds light edgewear and a couple small spots of foxing. The circular provides a long list of the then current prices for various grades of Cuban sugar molasses and coffee as well as a few other spices and products.
. James Drake was a shrewd English merchant who settled in Cuba and married into an aristocratic Cuban family. He and his sons led by Charles owned a number of prominent Cuban merchant houses and one of the island's major plantations that alone was worked by over 400 slaves.

The Drakes were an important cog in Moses Taylor Pyne's Triangle Trade slaving network that created the fortune used to transform Princeton from a small and rather unimportant New Jersey college into the major university it is today.

The family became quite wealthy exporting sugar and coffee from their stable of warehouses while also serving as the island's largest importer of goods and luxuries which they sold to plantation owners. Additionally the Drakes made large profits financing slave ships and by provided 'banking' credit to the planting elite to fund the purchase of land plants equipment and slaves.

Magoun & Clapp was an important Maine shipping firm established in the 1840s and Magoun was elected as Bath's first mayor in 1848. David C. Magoun was a prominent merchant in Bath Maine who joined with a wholesale grocer Charles Clapp in the early 1840s to establish an important New England shipping company. Magoun was elected to serve as Bath's first mayor in 1848.

For more information see Glass's "Moses Taylor Pyne and the Sugar Plantations of America at the Princeton & Slavery Project online "Drake C. & Co." at the Rothschild Archive London and Flassler's "Enforcing Slavery Era Disclosure Ordinance 2-92-585 against UBS and Credit Suisse online at Zurich University.

A scarce ephemeral testament to the mercantile dominance of Great Britain and New England in the slave trade during height of the abolitionist movement made even more desirable by an unlisted "printed circular" handstamp and uncommon stand-alone red "6" rate stamp applied in Boston. See ASCC vol 1 p168.

At the time of listing nothing similar is for sale in the trade nor has the auction of a similar item been reported at the Rare Book Hub or Worthpoint. A box of Drake & Co. correspondence is located at the Rothschild Archive in London and OCLC shows collections of Magoun & Clapper papers are held at two institutions.
