1782K1VFD9JN4VH6St. Petersburg 1782. Small folio 29.5 x 19.5 cm. Imperial Academy of Sciences Disbound. Treaty between Russia and Denmark in Russian and French in 2 parallel columns in cyrillic left and roman right types. 22 pp. Very rare first edition in Russian and French of a treaty for friendship and commerce concluded at St Petersburg negotiated between Tsarina Catherine the Great of Russia and King Christian VII of Denmark. The relationship between the two countries had become hostile after Peter III became the Russian Tsar in 1762. His descent from Holstein-Gottorf led to territorial conflicts between the two powers and even to a threat of war. When Catherina II took the throne their relation stabilized. In 1765 they made an alliance and in the 1773 Treaty of Tsarskoe Selo Russia returned Schleswig-Holstein to Denmark in exchange for Russian control over the Duchy of Oldenburg. The present treaty emphasizes the "peace" and "eternal friendship" between Russia and Denmark and gives specific conditions for trade.Old vertical crease from a former fold first and last leaf lightly soiled and spotted and the sewing has partly come loose but still in good condition.l KVK & WorldCat 2 copies; G.F. von Martens Recueil des principaux traités . The First Scientific Revolution is of course that which included Galileo and his experiments on falling bodies. Within a matter of months investigations of X rays led to the discovery of radioactivity by Becquerel. The importence of the discovery was well recognized in its own time. 19440001781USA. Good. 1944. On offer is a charming original manuscript relic of one American woman's war service in support of her country being a birthday memory book and autograph album kept by a beloved World War II parachute rigger named Jenny. There are about 40 entries and most were done in late May 1944 by many of her co-workers and a few from sailors and other enlisted men and officers she knew. Given the dates involved Jennie and her friends may very well have helped in the preparation for the D-Day invasion which occurred a couple weeks later. The home towns of the women show how America came together for the war since there are ladies from Milton Massachusetts Seattle Washington Dearborn Michigan Leon Iowa and Cuero Texas. There is also a photograph of a motorcyclist named Joe who has inscribed it to Jennie. The novelty outer boards are wood and the inner pages have light wear and some browning but overall G.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF WORLD WAR II FEMALE PARACHUTE RIGGER WOMEN AT WAR HOME FRONT EFFORTS TO SUPPORT THE WAR WW2 WWII WOMEN'S STUDIES GENDER STUDIES USA WAR EFFORT WAVES USN US NAVY D-DAY INVASION PREPARATIONS HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY AMERICANA ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL AMERICANA . hardcover

188312658Newark: Starbuck & Dunham Book and Job Printers 1883. 24pp. Octavo. Original printed wrappers. Moderate wear and soiling some tape residue along spine of upper wrapper spine chipped. Ex-General Theological Library with small ink stamp in upper margin on verso of title page. Overall still very good. Following swiftly on the heels of the Suwanee Convention of Southern Bishops in late July 1883 a large gathering of clergy and laymen met in New York City to organize the work of the Afro-American clergy of the Protestant Episcopal Church. It was a historic moment and "of the forty-two Colored Clergy of the United States only four had responded to the call in the negative and three others had failed to respond." A Committee was formed chaired by Alexander Crummell to draft a statement to the Church in America. Here the Committee calls attention "to the moral disasters which have come to our race through slavery – how family life parental authority and marriage integrity have been broken down by servitude" and issues a call for "an extraordinary effort for the erection of Churches throughout the South" especially in the large urban centers. In addition to the proceedings the work includes a "Sermon on Church Work by the Colored People" by Rev. Thomas A. Starkey the Bishop of Northern New Jersey a brief Finance Committee Report and concludes with the "Regulations of the Women's Auxiliary of the Convocation of the Colored Clergy." The latter is comprised of five articles and an addendum plus a listing of twenty women belonging to the New York and Newark branches of the organization. A scarce work with just over a dozen institutional copies. Not in Blockson.

Library Company Afro-Americana 8507A. Starbuck & Dunham, Book and Job Printers unknown

Later ink inscription on verso reading "from Holland / 1809." Minor wear and soiling. Very good. A very early engraved portrait of Sir Francis Drake.

A clean impression of the second state of this famous portrait of Sir Francis Drake at age forty-three shortly after he returned from circumnavigating the globe the basis for most of the later images of him. The image is taken from a portrait purportedly painted from life by Jean Rabel the Elder and is said to be a credible likeness of the famed navigator. The legend beneath the portrait indicates the dates of Drake's circumnavigation listing Rabel as the painter and Thomas de Leu as the engraver. Thomas de Leu 1560-1612 a pupil of Rabel's moved to Paris around 1576 and became one of the most noted portrait engravers of his time. This engraving of Drake was the basis for many later images of him including the well-known engravings by Jodocus Hondius and Crispin van de Passe. The earliest graphic image of one of the greatest figures in maritime history.

Marianne Grivel "Au Sieur Rabel Parangon du la 'pourtraicture'." in H. Zerner and M.
