190411448San Jose California: Press of Melvin Hillis & Black 1904. Dark brown printed wrappers 9.5 x 4.25" 72 pp blank memorandum leaves. Inscribed by owner to title page. A rare community cookbook from San Jose California published by The Girls' Guild of Trinity Church as an Easter fundraiser. Among the 100 recipes printed in the book most attributed are fried tomatoes Macaroni a la Espanol fine prune pudding and grilled almonds; there is also a section of recipes for the sick including flaxseed lemonade and raw beef sandwiches. The owner of this copy Mrs. Marion Grace Buller was a member of Trinity Church and has added approximately 25 pages' worth of manuscript recipes on the blank memorandum leaves. These include tomato souffle salmon loaf date cookies Welsh rarebit semolina pudding eggless milkless cake coffee macaroons Turkish delight sausages shampoo washing fluid and a cure for rheumatism. Not found in OCLC. Some of these recipes are attributed to Buller's friends and family including at least one of the contributors to the cookbook. Slight toning and occasional staining to pages few small holes to one leaf affecting a few letters of text staining to covers which are detached from text block old tape repairs over wrappers and spine.
