Signed and inscribed by author, dated 1918, atop first blank leaf. 66 pages. Accepted by the Royal Society of Canada as part of their Proceedings, 1918. "Tsoqalem, according to the Indians, was a real historic character, a member of the Cowichan tribe, a Vancouver Island division of that linguistic group of the Salish stock known to us under the term Halkomalem, whose habitat is and was the Lower Fraser Valley. How far the incidents of this story are literally true it is now impossible to say, as myth and fact are inextricably woven together in it; but there can be little doubt that an Indian of the character of Tsoqalem existed some generations ago among the Cowichans, and met with a tragic end at the hand of a woman, somewhat in the manner recorded in the story." - from Foreword. Front cover loose but present. Portions of backstrip missing. Age-toning to contents. Above-average external wear. Binding tender. (Amtmann 488, Watters p.88) Book

19507522Winnipeg Manitoba: . Nakl. Ukraïns'koï knyharni The Ukrainian Bookstore & The Canadian Farmer Publishing House N.D. Circa 1950's. Fourth Edition. Softcover. pp. 220. 12mo. measuring 14.5 x 21.5 cm. Thrice-stapled illustrated light-green card covers. Driver notes that "the text is in Ukrainian except for the recipe titles which are in English followed by the Ukrainian name. The English terms for certain ingredients such as baking powder have been used but in the Ukrainian alphabet i.e. they have been rendered phonetically not translated. Although the periodical Canadian Farmer is cited in the introduction as the organization that financed and published the cookbook its name does not appear on the title-page. The introduction refers to the need for a good Ukrainian-language manual for cooking in the English way. Peasants in the Old Country the introduction says worked so hard in the fields that they cooked only to meet the need for food. This cookbook was designed to help Ukrainians in Canada to learn about the cooking and baking expected of North American women. The introduction states that some of the text is translated from The White House Cook Book popular with Americans. O93.1 The White House Cook Book by Hugo Zieman and Mrs. Fanny Lemira Camp Gillette was an American cookbook but it was widely distributed in Canada. Part II of the text is Old-Country-style recipes prepared by Leontyna Luchakivska but with recipe names in English" with a third part dedicated to "Directions for Health" home remedies. Light wear to the covers slight crease to the centre contents uniformly without blemish with bright clean and unmarked leaves and firm sound binding; very good. Rare in commerce in this edition and state.

¶ See Driver Citation No. M128.1 pp. 983-984 who dates this edition to the 1950s. She further notes in her preface: In 1937 the Ukrainian Book Store at 660 Main Street in Winnipeg published in the Ukrainian language a collection of recipes for the preservation of fruits and vegetables by Mary Hiltz a well-known professor at the Manitoba Agricultural College M96.1. After the Second World War the same business published two recipe books: Ukrainian-English Cook Book M128.1 written in Ukrainian except for bilingual recipe titles intended to help immigrants learn cooking in Canada where expectations differed from those for peasant families in the old country..
