An outstanding Victorian dos-a-dos parlour photo album from a seemingly notable and well-to-do Minneapolis Minnesota family in the Gilded Age. On the “Blue†side the album opens with albumen boudoir-sized art photos of early Toronto including a “birds-eye†view. The first boudoir photo includes a ink manuscript list of “a few interesting dates†with mentions of Edward Murphy Jr. settling after 8 weeks passage presumably Ireland in Toronto followed by his family of 9 in 1837. Other dates mention settling of George & James Walker in Toronto 1837 Andrew joining the Volunteers on the Frontier and in 1843 Edward opening his business a “98†Long Street and building of the Terauley Street House near present-day Univ. of Toronto Toronto General Hospital etc. There are additional dates and note that John Walker and family “went West†in 1846 but unfortunately for this cataloguer there were a myriad of Edward Murphy’s John Walker’s and similar named families none of whom seemed to match either the entry date points. Only documentary evidence was that an Edward Murphy Jr. appears in the 1837 Toronto ONT street directory. Edward’s business appears to have been prosperous as this album incorporates a wide range of studio photographers during the Gilded Age from San Antonio to Chicago Milwaukee to Minneapolis. Two of the albumen studio photos 1 boudoir 1 cabinet interestingly depict a montage of smaller cabinet photos capturing all the images of Company A First Regiment N.G.S.M. or the storied Minnesota First Regiment National Guard at the time commanded by Captain John Amory. The Minnesota First Regiment is perhaps best remembered for their heroic charge in 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg and in the subsequent decades never lacked for sufficient recruits. The mounted CDV of an unidentified Civil War Corporal is included in the album and may have been from either the Murphy or Walker sides of the family if the internal MS notes are to be referenced. Of special interest are the four wonderful albumen cabinet photos depicting the N.S. Toboggan Club -- North Star Toboggan Club founded in 1886 and formed for tobogganing sporting events during the Saint Paul-Minneapolis Winter Carnival as well as competing against the Makwa Club Flour City Club and Snowshoe Club on their individual Toboggan slides -- basically uncontrolled and fast ice luge racing. The North Star Club’s slide was West of Minnesota on Glenwood Hill in what is now Theodore Wirth Park. The toboggan slide was probably located near where ski jumps were built later after the area became Saratoga Park then Glenwood Park and finally Theodore Wirth in 1909. The group shot provides first names or monikers of the eight intrepid toboganners in Feb. 1887 and the three individual ones depict Boyd Ballard & Dane all wearing their price ribbons from the competitions. Many of the extended family members were captured by such Minnesota studio photographers as H.A. Anderson who operated at 428 Nicollet and was the successor to H.R. Farr; the very popular James A. Brush whose studios tented to move up and down Nicollet Ave. and Hennepin Ave. from 1875-1890; G.W. Floyd who first partnered with Power and then expanded to three studios himself on Fifth and Hennepin; and William H. Jacoby 1841-1906 who with his son C.L. Jacoby produced the Minnesota First Regiment Christmas souvenir montage photos and was active until his death in California and even partnered with Haynes for a while and perhaps best remembered for his robbers’ portraits of the participants in the famed “Northfield†robbery. The photo of “Father†probably Edward Murphy Jr. while in San Antonio TX on business was taken by the Paris & Rothwell studio operated by Arthur C. Paris and Isaac N. Rothwell on 11&13 West Commerce until 1892. The establishment of the Second Bank of the United States in 1816 prompted immediate distrust of the institution with opponents charging it as constitutionally illegitimate and a direct threat to Jeffersonian agrarianism. With more local banks than any other state Maryland faced an unprecedented demand on specie from out-of-state banks and thus passed a bill calling for a tax on bank notes not issued by banks chartered within the state. The only such bank was the Baltimore branch of the Bank of the U.S. The cashier of the Baltimore Bank of the U.S. refused to pay the tax and the ensuing lawsuit would eventually make its way to the Supreme Court leading to the monumental decision in McCulloh v Maryland which held that the State could not tax a branch of the United States Bank and affirmed federal powers not delineated within the Constitution.<br /> <br /> Anti-banking prosecutors in Maryland however did not take the defeat in the Supreme Court lightly. Instead they indicted McCulloh and the President of the Baltimore bank of the U.S. James A. Buchanan 1768-1840; not to be confused with the U.S. President on conspiracy charges relating to 3 million dollars in loans that Buchanan and McColloh had extended to themselves and friends without proper collateral and without informing the directors of the parent Bank of the U.S.<br /> <br /> This scarce work comprises the reports indictments and evidence presented on the banking conspiracy cases brought against Buchanan and McCulloh published by the Directors of the Bank of the U.S. as part of their attempt to recuperate losses and address public .<br /> <br /> Scarce with only a single example in the auction records in the last quarter century. Much information is provided on the officers of the regiment and their comments regarding battles and skirmishes. Signed twice in pencil on the front free fly leaf: "Compliments of Col. W. D. Mann. Mann was the colonel of the regiment and there is a photograph of him as the frontispiece. Also signed by William Covert who was a member of Company H 7th Michigan Cavalry and served in the regiment from Aug. 15 1864 to July 18 1865. Harrison postmarked 1844 tipped in at front. ◆A few very faint scratches on back cover the printed portion with faint overall browning because of paper stock used otherwise A SUPERB COPY the attractive binding quite lustrous and virtually unworn and the illuminated portion with its brilliant colors and gold entirely intact.<br/> <br/> This is an exceedingly rare and beautifully executed item that combines a printed list with a group of full-page paintings and the hand-painted arms many of them minutely figured of those personages who from its founding by Edward III in 1348 through 1844 had been elevated to membership in the Order of the Garter. Inclusion in this order of chivalry is the highest of the honors bestowed by the British sovereign and is restricted at any given time to just 24 persons. Members include those chosen for their distinctive services to the crown as well as supernumerary members encompassing the British royal family and foreign monarchs. There are 719 members listed in the register here and an additional seven knights and their shields are added on the final illustrated page of the register. In 2008 Prince William became the 1000th Knight of the Garter. The name of the order according to tradition is taken from an incident at the court of Edward III in which the Countess of Salisbury lost one of the garters holding her hose to the amusement of onlookers. The king gallantly retrieved it and tied it to his own leg chiding the courtiers "Honi soit qui mal y pense" "Shame upon him who thinks evil upon it" which became the motto of the order. Our volume in addition to depicting the coats of arms of all recipients of the order through 1844 contains full-page illustrations of the insignia of the order a blue garter with the motto emblazoned in gold encircling the arms of England and surmounted by a coronet of St. George patron saint of the Order and of England slaying the dragon the badge and collar worn by Knights of the Garter on formal occasions a portrait of Edward III after that in St. George's Chapel and a knight of the order in full regalia including the garter worn below the left knee. This appears to be a most unusual item: we could find no copies listed in OCLC or ABPC and only one in COPAC the UK's National Academic & Specialist Library Catalogue. A later version was issued by publisher J.C. Hotten in 1872 but even that is located by OCLC in only six libraries. Our copy comes from the collection of and may have been specially prepared for Henry Drummond English banker politician and writer whose related work "Histories of the Noble British Families with Biographical Notices of the Most Distinguished Individuals in Each" was published by Pickering in 1842-46 in two giant folio volumes. Collated complete.James Maitland's Inquiry into the Nature and Origin of Public Wealth introduced the concept that has come to be known as the "Lauderdale Paradox" meaning there is an inverse correlation between public wealth and private wealth; an increase in the one can only come at the cost of a decrease in the other. The "Inquiry" was the first work to draw attention to the economic consequences of a budget surplus or deficit and served as the basis of the now widely applied Keynesian economic theories.Maitland a Scottish representative peer in the House of Lords became a controversial political and literary figure through his frequent opposition to William Pitt the Younger and the English government with regard to France. Loosely inserted to this copy is a pamphlet containing a short essay titled 'Henry George and Karl Marx' by Frank McEachran 1900-1975 a British schoolmaster and writer. The paper was presented at the International Conference London September 1936. Also loosely inserted are seven hand-typed pages by McEachran reflecting on this paper thirty years later. Rebacked with marbled paper covered boards and recent cloth spine with paper spine label. Externally with rubbing and bumping to the original boards and a couple marks to the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with occasional spots largely concentrated to the first and last few pages including the folding table to the rear.
