1838AQ25759London: Hatchard and Son 1838. 28pp. Largely disbound within original mauve wrappers. marked creased to extremities and slightly dog-earred. With the contemporary ink inscription of 'A.M. Whittall' to head of title. A Liverpool-printed polemic in the original wrappers by the influential Calvinist Anglican demagogue Hugh M'Neile 1795-1879. One of a prolific number of incendiary anti-Catholic publications Anti-slavery and anti-popery is addressed to a well-known opponent of slavery Edward Cropper and a prominent anti-Catholic Thomas berry Horsfall drawing from different situations various parallels between the two systems: 'For the Slavery of Popery.is indeed a desperate case' and 'The slave has no appeal in New Orleans nor the Papist in Madrid'. Polemic aside M'Neile's pamphlet which was clearly intended to be distributed widely with a price beneath the imprint of 'six-pence or 33s per hundred for distribution' highlights to a likely unenlightened audience the iniquity of the systems in various American states and the post-abolition West Indies where for example the realities of the apprenticeship system are railed against. This third edition was printed in the same year as the first and with the addition of a clarificatory preface also included in the second. All are rare; presumably read to pieces by contemporaries. OCLC locates copies of this edition at just two libraries: BL and Edinburgh. . Third edition with a preface. 8vo. Hatchard and Son unknown

1894519101B.T. Batsford London 1894. 1st Edition. Unframed Photograph Print. Very Good Condition. Apethorpe Hall's courtyard was rebuilt c.1623 for royal visits; James I stayed here frequently. Charles Latham was one of the most influential architectural photographers of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods renowned for his evocative images of country houses and formal gardens across Britain and Italy. His work helped define the visual language of architectural publishing and preservation. His first major commission was for J. Alfred Gotch's Architecture of the Renaissance in England 1894 from which this photograph is taken where his collotype plates captured the texture and grandeur of Elizabethan and Jacobean houses with remarkable clarity. Latham later helped shape the visual identity of Country Life magazine which we always have in stock photographing both historic estates and newly built homes. His images became central to the magazine's appeal combining editorial elegance with technical innovation in print reproduction. Each of Charles Latham's architectural photographs captures a singular moment of craftsmanship patronage or domestic ambition from heraldic chimney-pieces to formal garden fronts. Whether collegiate civic or aristocratic these buildings speak to the stylistic confidence of their age. Many remain inhabited studied or preserved today making each image not just a historical record but a quietly resonant portrait of continuity. Published in 1894 this fine Victorian-period image has been carefully removed from Gotch's monumental work. Printed in Leipzig Germany by Sinsel & Co. on thick cream-coloured paper this image reflects the firm's hallmark clarity and tonal depth featuring the building's name in sepia ink below a ruled border with Latham's beautifully composed black-and-white photograph taking centre place. 181864316Washington City 1818. 4to. Three-pages approximately 600 words; the Monroe response approximately 80 words in full below. Folded for mailing; otherwise fine in all respects. Lt. Jones a Naval officer prefaces his case with a reminder to President Monroe that they had met in July when Jones reported on "the motives and feelings of the Mediterranean Memorialists" referring to the September 1816 dispute between Commodore Oliver H. Perry and one of his officers Capt. John Heath who commanded a detachment of Marines aboard the U.S. frigate Java in the Mediterranean and the resulting court martial convened aboard ship in December of that year. The subaltern officers aboard ship including Jones signed a petition protesting the actions of Com. Perry toward Capt. Heath. This resulted in a request by their superior officers that all the subalterns who had signed the petition be recalled to the United States. see: "American State Papers" 15th Cong. 1st session 1818 Naval Affairs pp.453-6. Jones who had begun service in the Navy at the age of 15 appeals to the President regarding the resulting suspension of his promotion without the chance to defend himself in the more formal setting of a court martial: "How hard is my case! Condemned without trial; even without a hearing. To submit was my duty. To appeal is my right." Monroe's response some 80 words is written on the verso of the second integral leaf in full: "Lt. Jones of the navy. Will it not be proper to make some nominations of the young men who have made the atonement required The public attention was drawn to the object & feeling much excited which are reasons for terminating the affr. in favor of this young man many members have spoken to me. Still I would wish that the particular can be taken up by itself. JM / If any nomination is made it had better be added to those going in." A native of Virginia Thomas ap Catesby Jones continued to serve in the U.S. Navy until his death in 1858. He saw service in the War of 1812 including in the New Orleans campaign and the Mexican War and commanded the Pacific Squadron in the 1840s. He was by many accounts a controversial figure who in his later naval career meted out harsh discipline to his crew. Herman Melville who served aboard Jones's flagship the "United States" in the Pacific is believed to have modeled the captain of "White Jacket" and "Commodore J" in "Moby Dick" on Jones. " In 1850 in a politically charged court-martial shortly after White Jacket was published Jones was found guilty on three counts mostly related to 'oppression' of junior officers and relieved of command for several years" Wikipedia. <br/><br/> unknown books
