A trifle rubbed splitting to joints some loss to head and foot of spine. Armorial bookplate to FEP an internally clean and crisp copy. The first volume of the younger William Melmoth's bap. 1710 d. 1799 Letters on Several Subjects appeared in 1748 with the second appearing the following year. Though considered to be largely fictionalised they do contain some autobiographical truths being illustrative of Melmoth's preferred themes of morality arts rhetoric antiquity and the pressing matter of cruelty to insects. Printed under the pseudonym of Sir Thomas Fitzosborne the work would become a best-seller for publisher J. Dodsley reaching the tenth edition by 1795. Samuel Johnson was not however an admirer once commenting; 'From the author of Fitzosborne's letters I cannot think myself much in danger. A friend of Swift and Pope John Boyle Fifth Earl of Orrery 1707-1762 was on poor terms with his father who had featured in Swift’s ‘Battle of the Books’ following his row with Bentley and was left little in his will but nonetheless inherited something of his classical scholarship translating Horace as well as producing this substantial annotated translation of Pliny. Bound in quarter calf with paper-covered boards. A very scarce work on the laws surrounding tithes in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. This informative legal works explores the history and origin of tithes detailing the different types of tithe to and from whom they are payable as well as information on how to recover a tithe which is being withheld. Written by "The Author of The Laws of Landlord and Tenant" otherwise known as James Barry Bird who wrote a number of handbooks surrounding legal matters in the nineteenth century. Bound with the half title and one page of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Bound in quarter calf with paper-covered boards. Externally sound with slight rubbing to the board extremities and a little loss to the head and tail of the spine. Joints are cracking heavier to the front with the front board tenderly held. The ownership signature at the top the title-page is "John Harris". While there are several possibilities when it comes to a relatively common name this may well be the high-profile merchant and alderman John Harris b. circa 1725 d. 1801 who served as Sheriff of Bristol twice in the 1770s as well as being elected Mayor of the city in 1790. John Ryland opined on Harris's mayoralty saying that when Harris "was chief magistrate of this city in 1790 he was enabled to discharge the duties of that office with great fidelity and respectability and ever since he maintained the highest character for diligence and uprightness in his civil capacity" Timothy D. Scarce work. A play composed after the novel Things as They Are by William Godwin. A melodrama following the villain is Sir Edward Mortimer a head-keeper of the New Forest who has been acquitted on a charge of murder some years previously. As well as Wilford the hero who discovers Mortimer's secret from documents in an old iron chest. Written by George Colman known as "the Younger" an English dramatist and miscellaneous writer who was the son of George Colman the Elder. Bound in half calf with marbled boards. Externally worn with rubbing and light loss to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd mark to the boards. Both boards detached but present with loss to the spine. Internally firmly bound. Illustrated with twenty-one wood engravings. Publisher's advertisements at rear. ~ Second edition. First issued in 1788 this juvenile etiquette manual for mealtime is best known for its extensive section on carving well-illustrated with nineteen handsome woodcuts of carving instruction for different cuts of meat in addition to an image of the author's coat of arms on the verso of the title page and an illustration within the publisher's advertisements. Oxford points out that the book contains "curious information as to the habits of the day. For example the custom of 'a gentleman and a lady sitting alternately around the table' had only been lately introduced." Trusler 1735-1820 was the editor of Lord Chesterfield's Principles of Politeness 1785 and has been described as an "eccentric divine literary compiler and medical empiric" DNB. Some soiling throughout and a number of closed tears; lower corner of one leaf pages 119/120 torn off effecting one line of text on each page. In early marbled boards over half-calf with the spine now mostly perished with the structure now visible. Some signatures loose but all is present and still well-contained despite the spine. Now housed in an attractive custom clamshell box from Town's End Bindery. With the ownership signature of American historian Wilfrid Harold Munro. Three rounds of restoration are evident the most recent carefully documented a fourth round required. Herbert 942A: "A magnificent edition printed in large type. With many plates at the beginning and end of books engraved on steel from the designs of various artists. Some of the initial letters are similarly engraved. Unfortunately the book contained many misprints and earned the nickname 'A Baskett-ful of Errors'. From the misprint The Parable of the Vinegar for vineyard in the headline above Luke xx this edition is commonly known as the 'Vinegar Bible'." "John Baskett 1665–1742 attained the title of “printer to the King’s most excellent majesty†in 1709 but his publishing career turned for the worse when he issued this richly-engraved folio Bible in 1717.
