With the text in Russian and French in parallel columns and with ornamental rules at the head of each page. 10; 20 pp. First and only editions of two peace treaties between Catherine the Great of Russia and Gustav III of Sweden which concluded the Russo-Swedish war of 1788-1790 each page with the Russian text in the left column and the French text in the right column. The Treaty of Värälä signed on 14 August 1790 though here dated 6 August by Catherine's representative Otto Heinrich Igelström and Gustav II's proxy Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt effectively restored the pre-war status quo and barred Russia from interferring in Swedish internal affairs which had been one of the reasons Gustav III a cousin of Catherine the Great declared war on Russia in 1788. After initial defeats Sweden was able to destroy nearly a third of the Russian fleet at sea. The second treaty signed on 19 October 1791 at Drottningholm outside of Stockholm established a close military alliance between Sweden and the Russian Empire with each power pledging active support and Catherine agreeing to pay Sweden annual subsidies. Since it was signed with a keen eye on the French Revolution the treaty can been seen as a predecessor to the war of the first coalition of 1792-1797 though neither Russia nor Sweden participated in the latter. Both are printed on Russian paper with cyrillic names and initials in the watermarks. Wide-margined and printed on good paper. <br/><br/><em>Scarce first edition of l'Hôspital's second book - his second successfull textbook - the manuscript of which was left completed at his death in 1704. His first book "Analyse des infiniment petits pour l’intelligence des lignes courbes" 1696 was the first textbook of the differential calculus and his name lives on in the name of the rule for finding the limiting value of a fraction whose numerator and denominator tend to zero. His mathyematical teacher was Jean Bernoulli.The year in which Newton published the anti-Cartesian "Arithmeticus" there appeared in France a conspicuously successfull textbook on Cartesian geometry along the lines of that of Guisnée. This was the "Traité Analytique des Sections Coniques". a book which contains less original material than that of Guisnée but which is more extensive and closer to the modern manner of treatment. The work had been intended for publication at the time the authors famous calculus textbook appeared in 1696 but l'Hospital's illness apparently led to delay and it appeared posthumously in 1707. It is Cartesian in emphasis and although it consists of but one volume follows generally the tripartite plan of Lahire and Ozanam: first an algebraic quasi-analytic treatment of the Conic Sections along the lines of Apollonian theory; then an analytic study of the loci and finally a long section on the customary construction by conics of the roots of cubic and quartic polynominal equations. LHospital sometimes used two axes and seems to have recognized the interchangeability of these but he betrays some hesitation. In general L'Hospital like Descartes was more interested in analytic geometry as a measure of ecpressing loci algebraivcally than as a method of deriving the properties of a curve from its equation." John Churchman 1705-1775 was a traveling Quaker minister who lived in Nottingham Chester County in eastern Pennsylvania. "An Account of the Gospel Labours." is an autobiographical account of his life and ministry in that area. The importance of the work is less that of a religious tract than of descriptions of American life before the Revolution and with Churchman's interactions with the local Native Americans. Treaty between Russia and Denmark in Russian and French in 2 parallel columns in cyrillic left and roman right types. 22 pp. Very rare first edition in Russian and French of a treaty for friendship and commerce concluded at St Petersburg negotiated between Tsarina Catherine the Great of Russia and King Christian VII of Denmark. The relationship between the two countries had become hostile after Peter III became the Russian Tsar in 1762. His descent from Holstein-Gottorf led to territorial conflicts between the two powers and even to a threat of war. When Catherina II took the throne their relation stabilized. In 1765 they made an alliance and in the 1773 Treaty of Tsarskoe Selo Russia returned Schleswig-Holstein to Denmark in exchange for Russian control over the Duchy of Oldenburg. Wide-margined. <br/><br/><em>First edition of this monumentalwork by which Coulomb CREATED THE SCIENCE OF FRICTION."1781 saw him win the Academy prize for his mémoir "Théorie des Machines Simples" in which the results of his experiments on the friction of different bodies slipping on one another dry or coated with greasy substances were presented."Timoshenko p. 48."Coulomb’s most celebrated study one that brought him immediate acclaim was "Théorie des machines simples" his prize-winning friction study of 1781. He investigated both static and dynamic friction of sliding surfaces and friction in bending of cords and in rolling. From examination of many physical parameters he developed a series of two-term equations the first term a constant and the second term varying with time normal force velocity or other parameters. In agreement with Amontons’s work of 1699 Coulomb showed that in general there is an approximately linear relationship between friction and normal force; but he extended the investigation considerably to show complex effects due to difference in load materials time of repose lubrication velocity and other considerations. Coulomb’s work in friction remained a standard of theory and experiment for a century and a half until the advent of molecular studies of friction in the twentieth century. To quote Kragelsky and Schedrov’s recent monograph p. 52 on the history of friction: "Coulomb’s contributions to the science of friction were exceptionally great. Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 414 First German edition.</p><p><em>Le Traite des Amateurs</em> is a chess treatise composed by a "Society of Amateurs" contemporaries of Philidor; who all frequented the Cafe de la Regence in Paris. Of these the strongest players were Bernard Carlier Leger and Verdoni. Philidor constantly resident in London took no part in writing the "Traite des Amateurs;" which in fact embodies many criticisms and comments upon his earlier printed book. Only four masters of the group considered the strongest are known: Bernard Carlier Leger and Verdoni. A part partially from Verdoni who is the only one of the Amateurs with his own entry in the Oxford Companion to Chess not very much is known about the life of these masters. Their first names places and dates of birth or deaths the year of death of Verdoni tough is known are for instance unknown. They however appear periodically in the chess literature of the time and consequently it is possible to provide some details on their lives and styles. Concerning their games several Verdoni's games are known while only one game of Bernard and Carlier playing together and winning against Philidor who gives to them the advantage of Pawn and Move survived. Verdoni Bernard Carlier and Leger although they didn't even approach Philidor's level were considered the best in the world in the years following death of Philidor and directly or indirectly since Verdoni after the publication of <em>Traite</em> moved to London have disputed each other the scepter of Philidor's successor. There are of course not records of their games and consequently it would be impossible for us to assess the relative strength of these player. Deschapelles however reported that Philidor classed Legalle as a player on even terms Verdoni as one to receive pawn for the move Bernard and Carlier as Pawn and move players. Bernard was probably the best chess player at the Cafe de la Regence around the end of the 18th century or at least until the arrival of Alexandre Deschapelles to the world chess scene in 1798 according to George Walker.Murray</p><p>Borje Borjesson 1901-1980 was an avid chess collector and had decorative book plates designed for his collection. The article <em>Chess Bookplates </em>was printed in Bookplate International 1999 volume 6 Number 2 describing: "The chessboard of Borje Borjesson bookplate ranks among the luxury boards with black and gold squares as the background to some stylish chessmen. The elegant set was designed by the Swedish artist Arthur Sjogren in 1923 as seen in the book plate affixed to this copy.<br /><br /><strong>Condition:</strong><br /><br />Spine ends rubbed small crack at head and heal hinges corners rubbed book plate of Borje Borjesson on front paste down old previous owner's neat name on title else about very good.</p> Friedrich Nicolai hardcover

First published in French in 1710. It is the only larger philosophical work Leibnitz himself published and it is a work of immense importance to philosophy theology and mathematics. In this work Leibniz represents his excellent calculating machine which has served as the basis for what we now call a computer as he presents the binary arithmetic "Rechnen mit Null und Eins" "calculating with zero and one" in the Beylage p. 926 which forms the basis for the much later developed computer science see PMM 177. This work contains "Anmerkungen" by Richter and "Lebens=Beschreibung" by Fontenelle followed by "Beylage". In these "Beylage" we find the method of converting numbers into the binary system which here is said to be "etwas recht neues welches der Herr Leibnitz zu Hanover erfunden" "something brand new which Mr. Leibnitz von Hanover has discovered" as well as "Eine Schrift. From a series of etchings as a part of Theatre of Paintings Theatrum Pictorum published by David Teniers the Younger in the 1660s for his employer at the time Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria. It was a catalog of numerous paintings and painters in the ArchdukeÕs collection. Teniers prepared the engravings of the paintings for the book. See British Museum for more on earlier print c.1660. Second edition. First published in 1739 with "Practitoner in the Law" listed as the author this is a formbook with a section containing instructions for conveyancing. It was intended for law clerks lawyers and laymen. It went though six editions in London the last one in 1772 and four editions in Philadelphia published in 1774 1788 1792 and 1795. Preface 2 pp of typefaces 192 pp. plus table. Full contemporary brown leather binding with raised spine bands and leather spine label. Condition is VERY GOOD ; covers have moderate wear to edges front has some surface loss to a coiple of spots in the leather. Front joint shows a crack but binding is solid and tight with the stitching all good and holding. Endpapers have a few notes in a contemporary hand. Text is bright and clean. Scarce title. Law. RGR.
