Since this was printed just before the beginning of the Civil War it is NOT a Confederate imprint. "Third Thousand" per the title page. Softcover. Spine is cocked; foxed throughout with some dampstain at the foot yet text has been uncompromised. Curling at the corners with some soiling. Predominantly unmarked except for a previous owner's name "L. J. Lee" dated April 1861 in pencil on the front flyleaf and a couple of markings in the margin on page 65 looking as the soldier was graphing the instruction of "By platoons left wheel. MARCH." and "Forward. March" also in pencil. The wear and soiling invokes a wonder if L. J. Lee carried this handbook with him in battle during the Civil War and what this little book has seen. Interior pages are clean unmarked and in great condition. <br> <br> This volume covers compiled general local and session laws as well as codes and statutes regarding Arizona California Colorado Dakota Idaho Montana Nevada New Mexico Oregon Utah Washington and Wyoming. <br><br> These regulations were being reviewed and published in the year 1885. The same year the Rock Springs massacre occurred in the Wyoming territory. It was a result of a riot between Chinese immigrant miners and white immigrant miners. In addition to growing racial tensions white miners were angered by the ongoing labor dispute over the Union Pacific Coal Department's policy of paying Chinese miners lower wages than white miners. This policy caused the Chinese to be hired over the white miner. When the rioting ended at least 28 Chinese miners were dead and 15 were injured. Rioters burned 75 Chinese homes. <br><br> This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside of Canada and the US.
