After acknowledging receipt of $90 Corson announces that the previous week she 'had a letter from the House accepting my book.' She has received no answer to her letter asking for 'some information' and asks Booth to 'be my mediator again'. 'I want to know before doing anything more on the book how many pages it should be and how many words to a page; and also if I must send the entire M.S. or if I can write and send it in sections.' After being confined to her home 'this week one of my doctors thinks he will get me away for a few days to Plainfield where he will be over Sunday so that he can keep an eye on his precious patient. Then I shall come back to work again.' Her 'first outing in the city' will be to see Booth 'and Mrs. Wright her companion Mrs Anne Wright 'a friend from childhood'. I hope you both enjoyed your visit to Mrs. Spofford the writer Harriet Prescott Spofford 1835-1921 and trust that Mrs. Wright's wrist is strong again.' Blue endpapers. This is a true first printing with first edition on copyright pg and August 1961 on the "about the authorrs" pg. Condition is VERY GOOD ; covers extremely clean and bright with no wear at corners or spine ends. Spine is very mildly toned with the red title rectangle just a little paler than the front. Spine ends only mildly bumped. Binding tight. The text is extremely clean with the exception being a few minor spots to the right text edge and a few small spots on one pg of the index at back with a matching tiny spot at the edge of the blue rear pastedown. There are 12 chapters starting each starting with a story involving Alice the young girl and her mother followed by a recipe which is explained in detailed within the story. Two vols bound in one illustrated large quarto pp 220 196 very slightly aged internally signature on front endpaper bound in a simple buckram very slightly worn. Poissons osseux poissons cartilagineux mollusques crustaces etc. Alan Davidson's copy with his "fishy" bookplate. One of the most important figures in twentieth century culinary writing and scholarship Davidson was a British diplomat and historian best known for his writing and editing on food and gastronomy. He was the author of the 900-page encyclopedic The Oxford Companion to Food. In 1948 Davidson joined the Foreign Office and served in diplomatic posts in Washington Tunis Brussels Cairo the Hague; from 1973 to 1975 he was ambassador to Laos. While living in Tunis his wife asked him to look for a cookbook on fish because she did not recognize any of the local varieties. Not being able to find one he wrote one himself. The original manuscript was copied with a stencil machine. A copy reached the British cooking guru Elizabeth David who passed it on to Penguin Books which published it in 1972 as Mediterranean Seafood. This was followed by Seafood Of South East Asia 1979 and North Atlantic Seafood 1979 for which he travelled throughout the region gathering thousands of recipes from Portugal to Iceland. Cloth.
