It has two seperate narrative threads the first standard form fiction following a detective and the second a series of letters between "Mo Yan" and an aspiring author who is a fan of his work. Over the course of the book the narrative threads cross over and merge.<br /> <br /> Originally suppressed in China as subversive it was first printed in Taiwan in 1992 under the title "Jiu Guo". Mo Yan meaning "Don't speak" is a Chinese novelist and short story writer. Accompanied by an Autograph Letter Signed from Forrest 1p 8½" X 11" Los Angeles CA 1925 May 10. Addressed to Sunkist Garment Factories. Good plus. Lightly age toned and slightly edgeworn. Interesting to note that this experienced trade industry editor who had also edited "Woman's World" "Household Guest" "Homefolks" and "Everyday Life" was by 1925 looking for work. He writes here: "As an applicant for the position you advertise in today's Times I am able to offer you a broad experience in handling canvassers and in sales through other channels. I formerly held the position of sales promotion manager for H.W. Gossard Co. Chicago and managed the Protexwel Mfg. Corp. for them selling waterproof wear for women & children thro agents etc. I have definite qualifications as a general office executive in connection with my sales & advertising ability. Have been paid up to $100.00 weekly for my services but we should be able to agree on remuneration. Trust you will interview me." Boldly and attractively penned in black ink. Interesting pair. The sections on Puddings and Pastry Cakes and Biscuits seem most interesting. Recipes include Pitcaithy bannock; Old Maid's Cake; Apricot Water Ice; Soufflé of Oranges; Her Majesty's Pudding; Friar's Chicken Soup; Sheep's Head Pie.
