It contains a selection of pages from throughout the actual book with a section at the end giving space for folks to sign up to buy the book. Much scarcer than the actual White House Cook Book as only a relatively small number were printed for this special purpose. A drawing of a chef's toque is incorporated into Rene's signature. Laid in is Verdon's business card from San Francisco's Le Trianon restaurant which he opened in 1972. Verdon was hired by Jacqueline Kennedy in 1961 and he stayed on to serve as White House chef to Lyndon Johnson after Kennedy was shot. He emigrated from Britain to Melbourne in 1859 and began working for The Age newspaper. He then moved to South Australia and in 1861 he wrote a series of articles for the Adelaide Advertiser on the vineyards and orchards of South Australia. In 1864 he returned to Melbourne and undertook a similar commission for The Age writing a series of articles on a number of the vineyards of Victoria. The articles provide a valuable and unique account of the emerging pre-phylloxera Victorian wine industry with descriptions of the founders of the Geelong Western District Ballarat and Bendigo. The series is incomplete as neither the Yarra Valley nor Sunbury are mentioned; perhaps because Ward returned to South Australia to take up a new position. Unlike the South Australian articles the Victorian articles were apparently not published in pamphlet form.<br /> <br /> Scarce. The firm was established in 1908 from the merger of two family firms of wine merchants established in the early part of the nineteenth century. For many years they had outposts in Gibraltar East Africa and elsewhere in the British Empire. Written on commission the booklet discusses the role of wine in cooking and how to flamber marinate and chose wines before giving nine elegantly written recipes for French dishes using wine and a liqueur. With the permission of Saccone & Speed the content was incorporated into the first edition of David's French Country Cooking published by John Lehmann in 1951.<br /> <br /> One of the most scarce of David's publications.
