Two wine-related ephemera pieces from the mid-20th century. - New York n. d. ca 1955. Small booklet; 6 x 3 1/4; pp. 10 including text to wraps verso; pictorial wraps decorated after a poster by Toulouse Lautrec; illustrated with small in-line drawings; a tiny spot to spine else very minor wear; in about very good condition. A charming booklet on the specifics of French wines and advertisement for the company it was created by Barton and Guestier Wines - established in 1725 in Bordeaux by Thomas Barton and represented in over 130 countries. Topics in the booklet included a list with a few "rules of thumb" as to which wine to serve with various foods at what temperature should wines be served etc. - San Francisco 1953. Small card; 2 1/4 x 3 1/2; four wine cocktails recpies on recto illustrated with small drawings; calendar for 1953 on verso; very light wear; in near fine condition. Petri Wine Company was founded in 1886 by Raffaello Petri in the San Joaquin Valley initially producing their wines only in kegs for bulk local distribution. During the Prohibition the family closed down their wineries and temporarily traded in Italian leathers and cigars later using those profits to expand the wine-making operation by buying competing wineries. In 1935 they began bottling their wines and selling them nationally. In the early 1940s the company was a major sponsor of the popular radio show "The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes." In 1953 Petri was the largest domestic producer of wines in the US. Louis Petri grandson of Raffaello was instrumental in founding Allied Grape Growers - an organization whose main goal was stabilizing grape prices. Hilton is best remembered for his profitable association with Alexander Stewart and for his 1500 acre estate in Saratoga Springs known at its height as Woodlawn Park. Not recorded in OCLC. It features a selection of fascinating perspectives on medicine including analyses of the effects on health of headwear wine and malt liquor consumption mealtimes and water drinking among other things as well as considerations of race and longevity quacks mothering and more. On tobacco: "'A Victim of the Weed' is desirous of knowing whether he can at once abandon his pipe and segars or must part company in a gradual manner. Our advice is to desist immediately and entirely from the use of tobacco in every form and in any quantity however small" 220. On race: "The differences in this respect are primitive in the different races; the mucous body or varnish which constitutes the layer between the true skin beneath and the outer covering or cuticle being white or nearly so in the European or Caucasian races; yellowish in the Mongul or African; and black in the African" 146.
