51-1084San Francisco: Bergez-Frank's Old Poodle Dog Restaurant 1915. 6 pp. foldout. 9 x 5.75 inches. Handcolored photograph of a girl and ads for Cresta Blanca and Italian Swiss Colony wines. In 1908 the owners of the Poodle Dog the Old Poodle Dog John Bergez Restaurant and Frank's Rotisserie merged their businesses opening Bush Street and Claude Lane under Lalanne with partners Jean B. Pon Jean Bergez Louis Coutard and Camille Mailhebeau. The restaurant now boasted five floors; the top floor offered a ballroom. A side door mimicked the earlier establishment with a birdcage elevator that took the men and their "companions" upstairs. They brought the elegance of the Nineties back to San Francisco as the Bergez-Franks Old Poodle Dog. The cuisine reflected the skills of some of the finest French chefs in the city but also included innovations unique to San Francisco. Overall a bright legible VG copy of this extensive wine list. 24 pp unnumbered. Approx. 9-1/2 x 6-1/4" <br/><br/>About 500 wines are listed throughout this little booklet. Categorized with 10 pages of "Vins Rouges" 2 pages of "Vins Rouges Demi-Bouteilles 2 pages of "Vins Rouges Magnums 3 pages of "Vins Blancs" 2 pages of "Bourgognes" 1 page "Champagnes" 1 page "Champagnes Demi-bouteilles and ending with 2 pages of "Liqueurs". Le Chapon Fin still exists today as does the incredible wine cellar which they do tours of! We found a little blurb about the restaurants history on the website: "Immediately after the French Revolution part of the central area of Bordeaux was rebuilt. New streets radiated out from a market square. In 1825 Messrs Chantal and Despirou opened a restaurant and wine merchant's shop at 7 Rue Montesquieu next to the Théâtre Français. "Le Chapon Fin" quickly became a popular address. . Chapon Fin was frequented by a succession of kings: Alfonso XIII of Spain one of the restaurant's most faithful customers who had his own wine cellar Manuel II of Portugal the Sultan of Morocco Queen Ranavalona of Madagascar and the Prince of Wales later Edward VII. The Chapon Fin was also a favorite with artists such as Sarah Bernhardt Yvette Guilbert and Toulouse Lautrec and politicians such as Aristide Briand who adored the lamprey in red wine and George Clemenceau." A bit of staining to fore-edge corners. Front of the menu illustrated by Giacomo Patri. Italian-born American artist Giacomo Patri 1898-1978 was an illustrator for San Francisco newspapers beginning in 1925 while teaching at the Presidio Hill School and California Labor School. From 1948 until retiring in 1966 he headed his own art school in San Francisco. He is well-known for his wordless novel White Collar a chronicle of the aftermath of the 1929 stock market crash. unknown

The restaurant and inn was built in 1844 and still is open today. Menu items include oysters from the Providence River "Pickled Lambs' Tongues" and "Lobster a la Commodore".
