He captures masterfully the tragic and the comic in his illustration. The images are as follows: 'La Péché Partegé' La fiancé du roi de Garbe Le diable de Enfer l'ange Gabriel L'enfer des Beautés cruelles Le femme adultère le tonneau Blanchefleur Le jument de compère Pierre La ressuscitée.

The Richard de Bas paper is of exceptional quality and is produced in a mill dating back to the sixteenth century. This paper was much favoured by Dali and other artists such as Picasso. It was also used for the sole copy of the Constitution of the 5th French Republic of 1958 and the Nobel Prize diplomas have also been written on Richard de Bas paper.
Michler-LApsinger 552-561; Field 72-8 Paris, Michèle Broutta et Pamela Verlag, 1972. hardcover
117889Paris Editions Surréalistes 1930. . Limited edition numbered 2/9 'auteur' on the justification seemingly out of series inscribed by Dali on the half-title in ink 'hommage de l'auteur Salvador Dali'; 4to 19 x 22 cm; 8 illustrations hors-texte of which one is a photolithographed portrait of Gala one an original etching three reproductions of Dali's drawings and three photographic prints; loose as issued in the original aluminium foil paper wrappers covered in red printed glassine very minor loss of wrappers to spine a very good copy.
The first edition of Dali's first surrealist work.

The 'femme visible' refers to Dalí's wife Gala who inspired him to create the book and to whom the work is dedicated. Her portrait is placed opposite the metallic covers to provide a reflection of her. It is Dali's manifesto for the paranoiac-critical method a surrealist technique which consists of the artist invoking a paranoid state resulting in a deconstruction of the psychological concept of identity subjectivity thereby becoming the primary aspect of the artwork.

The present example is numbered '2/9 auteur' on the justification and signed by the artist on the half-title. The fragile red and metallic jacket which is often found damaged and torn is in remarkably fresh and unrestored condition.
Michler-Lapsinger 4; Launay 288. 196839447Paris: Draeger 1968. Salvador Dalí. First edition. A PRESENTATION COPY FOR DR. ROUCAUTE Dalí's personal physician with a SIGNED AND DEDICATED INDIA INK DRAWING BY DALI ON A PRELIMINARY BLANK. Most of Dalí's presentation drawings were done on the spur of the moment in ballpoint or felt-tip pen and are rather simple compositions. This one however is in India ink with Dalí's characteristic carefully-planned spatter: it was obviously prepared ahead of time for presentation to a close friend the doctor. The drawing measures 27.5 x 30 cm and features several typical elements of Dalí's iconography: a knight on horseback an angel a dedicatory phrase a signature with a crown and a date. They are arranged in an absolutely wonderful apparent chaos--making it impossible to know what to look at first or what to focus on--and yet there is perfect harmony. Large 4to. Publisher's cloth with dustjacket. An excellent copy of the book WITH THE INDIA INK DRAWING IN PERFECT CONDITION.

Draeger hardcover

1969190911New York: Maecenas Press Random House 1969. Wonderland Surrealized First Dalí edition number 608 of 2500 copies signed by Dalí on the title page recasting Carroll's children's classic into adult surrealist vision. "The artist Salvador Dalí famous for his surreal images of melting clocks and barren landscapes at first glance might not seem to have much in common with a retiring Victorian English don who wrote children's books. But actually Dalí and Carroll had much in common: both men were ardent explorers of dreams and the imagination attempting in their art to show the fertile pathways to the unconscious. This artistic temperament might explain why in his sixties Dalí created twelve surreal illustrations - one for each chapter - for Alice in Wonderland. Because he required a rich lush palette for his painted drawings Dalí turned to the oldest process for reproducing photographic images for printing: heliogravure. Similar to engraving the method is time consuming and costly. Each heliogravure is printed by hand and considered an original" Nichols p. 28. A further 200 copies were issued signed and with extra plates. This copy has a duplicate limitation leaf numbered 608 inserted; presumably a collation error by the publisher; the book is otherwise complete. Folio. With 12 colour heliogravures and a four-colour etched frontispiece on Rives paper. Publisher's fall-down-back box of brown straight-grain quarter morocco cloth sides portfolio of letterpress and illustrations loose in the brown cloth chemise as issued. Association copy inscribed by the publisher to Salvador Dali "To Salvador Dali - Not as good as your cookbook - but the Spanish edition will be better - Lyle Stuart." Written by William Powell as a teenager and first published in 1971 at the height of Vietnam War protests and the counterculture movement in the United States 'The Anarchist Cookbook' was created as an educational tool meant to teach the general public "that violence is an acceptable means to bring about political change" and provide them with the skills to do so. The book contains instructions for the manufacture of explosives rudimentary bugging devices lethal and nonlethal weapons as well as instructions for the home manufacture of illicit drugs including LSD. When Powell converted to Anglicanism in 1976 he attempted to have the book removed from circulation but because the copyright had been issued to the original publisher Lyle Stuart and subsequent publishers that purchased the rights circulation continued until 1991. For these few copies Dali apparently often added a simple autograph homage. The book did not meet with great success as Eluard reveals in a letter to Gala on January 27 1931: “La Femme visible a une presse immonde. Pourquoi Dali n’a-t-il pas mis dans ses dédicaces le nom des gens. Comme cela on n’en parlera pas ou en mal.†La Femme Visible is receiving dreadful publicity. Why didn’t Dali put people’s names in his dedications That way people won’t talk about it or talk about it badly. Georges Sebbag in his bibliography of Editions Surréalistes does not mention these press copies nor the printing of the book in sheets.

One of DalÃ’s earliest books containing four texts: “L’Âne Pourri†“La Chèvre Sanitaire†“L’Amour†and “Le Grand Masturbateur.†In these writings inspired by Freudian and post-Freudian theories DalÃ’s aim is to upset the frontiers between dream and reality and to break down the convictions that form the basis of so-called “bourgeois values.†He later spoke of it as “a spontaneous method of irrational knowledge based on the critical and systematic objectification of delirious associations and delirious interpretations.†

References: Michler and Löpsinger.
