This new edition contains 456 pages. Picasso is 82 at the beginning of 1964. He and Jacqueline havenow lived together for 10 years and been married since 1961.They reside in Mougins in the south of France. Images ofJacqueline continue to figure prominently in Picasso’s work.In 1964 he paints portraits of Jacqueline posed seated and as areclining nude often with a cat. Picasso then draws a series ofpencil sketches alternating between the head of Shakespeare andthat of a monkey. Mid-year he does a series of portraits of men:often bearded with a cigarette and wearing a striped shirt.In October of 1964 Picasso completes 29 paintings of an artistat an easel. These all take as their starting point his 1963 paintingThe Painter. Picasso then makes paintings of an artist and model.In December Picasso creates a number of works depicting thehead of a man or a boy.In the early part of 1965 Picasso begins a series with a lobsterusually being attacked by a cat. He also paints the first in a seriesof a youth serenading a nude woman at dawn on the beach titled- L’aubade and works on a group of views of Mougins. In Marchthere is a series with a nude model seated in a room and a canvason an easel sometimes with an artist present. In April the artiststarts looking like Picasso and the model like Jacqueline.During April of 1965 Picasso paints large horizontal canvasesof a nude often reclining next to the head or torso of a manor boy. Another horizontal canvas is the first of the WatermelonEaters. Picasso continues to paint horizontal views of Mouginsand by mid-year Picasso paints a series of heads childlike withbold lines. During October Picasso begins painting images of amother and child.The artist is not particularly productive during 1966. In the earlypart of 1966 Picasso produces only some sketches and in Aprilhe begins a series after Jupiter et Thétis by Ingres. For the balanceof the year Picasso does caricatures and sketches on themes fromprevious years.During January of 1967 Picasso creates sketches including a musicianwatermelon eater flutist and man holding a lamb. Picassoalso begins ink washes and oil paintings of a musketeer whichdevelop into a painter who then caresses a model. The musketeersometimes as an artist sometimes with a nude woman becomesa series of paintings in March and April. Between April and JunePicasso designs a number of covers for the book Picasso: Theatre.In June Picasso continues the Serenade at Dawn series. FromJuly through September Picasso draws sketches with a variety ofthemes. In October he makes a group of drawings of a violentand distorted kissing couple. The first edition of this catalogue was published in 2004. This new edition adds works that have come to light since 2004as well as references to subsequent public sales and exhibitions. This new edition has 404 pages twenty more than the first edition as wellas eight new color plates.Fifty-five of the new works in this edition originated in two sketchbooks from 1970-1971.The first of these is sometimes referred to as the Birthday Sketchbook since the first work is dated on the master’s 89th birthday October25 1970. The last is dated April 26 1971. The sketchbook contained 27 drawings and was acquired by François Lachenal in Paris. Asubsequent owner consigned the whole sketchbook of Christie’s who sold the individual pages in London on June 23 2005.The second sketchbook is referred to as the Berggruen Album since it was acquired by the prominent dealer Heinz Berggruen whoselegacy is the Berggruen Museum in Berlin. This sketchbook contained 26 drawings and manuscript dates on the two covers. The wholesketchbook was first published as a facsimile by Berggruen’s son John a dealer in San Francisco in 2004. An exhibition was held at JohnBerggruen’s gallery in early 2004 on the occasion the publication of the facsimile. The Berggruen heirs then put the sketchbook up for saleat Sotheby’s in London where the individual pages were sold on February 9 2005.The main exhibition since 2004 focusing on Picasso’s final years was held at the Gagosian Gallery in New York in the spring of 2009. Thecatalogue and show were entitled Picasso Mosqueteros and included 52 paintings from 1964-1972 and a selection of etchings from the late1960s.The last image in the first edition of this catalogue was dated Feb. 21 1973.
