One leaf measuring 5-1/4 by 8-1/4 inches writing in ink on recto; handsomely floated matted and framed with a later print of his self-portrait entire piece measures 17-1/2 inches by 15 inches. $13500.Autograph letter signed by Pablo Picasso written to his friend the banker Max Pellequer.The letter written from Picasso's studio ""La Californie"" in Cannes reads in full in translation: ""'La Californie' Cannes le 4.3.56. ""My dear friend Max I present to you my friend Roland Penrose who is writing a book about me. He would like me to see his words manuscript at your house. Thank you and best to you. Picasso."" The recipient of this letter Max Pellequer was a French banker who co- founded and later directed the Banque Nationale du Commerce et de l'Industrie. Over several decades Pellequer's astute financial advice and shrewd stewardship of Picasso's sprawling assets enabled the artist to become a millionaire. Pellequer was also a kindred spirit a serious art collector who acquired artwork by artists like Picasso Degas Cézanne Gauguin Matisse Miró Modigliani Dufy and others. Picasso purchased works from Pellequer's collection and the artist designed a bookplate for his beloved friend. During the Nazi occupation of France Pellequer is believed to have helped save some of Picasso's work by hiding it. This is no small accomplishment when one considers it would have probably been classified as ""degenerate"" by the Nazis and otherwise destroyed. Sir Roland Penrose 1900-1982 was a British surrealist artist and avid promoter of modern art. He wrote Portrait of Picasso in connection with an exhibition in celebration of Picasso's 75th birthday held from May to September 1956 at the Institute Contemporary of Contemporary Arts in London and MOMA in New York. With an introduction by Alfred Barr the volume included paintings and drawings personal photographs documents and souvenirs of Picasso as seen by himself and through the eyes of his friends.Fine condition. unknown

La tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea known as La Celestina novel attributed to Fernando de Rojas published in 1499 illustrated by Picasso with 66 etchings with aquatints dated in plate between April 11 and August 19 1968 unsigned. The etchings done for la Celestine are part of the 347 series Picasso worked to the etchings almost daily with Aldo and Pietro Crommelynck at their atelier in Mougins using different techniques. After the impressions were pulled 66 etchings were chosen by Picasso to illustrate La Celestine. The character of La Celestine was first portrayed by Picasso on a painting in 1903. Limited numbered editions in 400 copies on Richard de Bas laid paper watermarked La Celestine. Copy n 48 signed on justification page by Picasso in pencil. This new edition contains 456 pages. Picasso is 82 at the beginning of 1964. He and Jacqueline havenow lived together for 10 years and been married since 1961.They reside in Mougins in the south of France. Images ofJacqueline continue to figure prominently in Picasso’s work.In 1964 he paints portraits of Jacqueline posed seated and as areclining nude often with a cat. Picasso then draws a series ofpencil sketches alternating between the head of Shakespeare andthat of a monkey. Mid-year he does a series of portraits of men:often bearded with a cigarette and wearing a striped shirt.In October of 1964 Picasso completes 29 paintings of an artistat an easel. These all take as their starting point his 1963 paintingThe Painter. Picasso then makes paintings of an artist and model.In December Picasso creates a number of works depicting thehead of a man or a boy.In the early part of 1965 Picasso begins a series with a lobsterusually being attacked by a cat. He also paints the first in a seriesof a youth serenading a nude woman at dawn on the beach titled- L’aubade and works on a group of views of Mougins. In Marchthere is a series with a nude model seated in a room and a canvason an easel sometimes with an artist present. In April the artiststarts looking like Picasso and the model like Jacqueline.During April of 1965 Picasso paints large horizontal canvasesof a nude often reclining next to the head or torso of a manor boy. Another horizontal canvas is the first of the WatermelonEaters. Picasso continues to paint horizontal views of Mouginsand by mid-year Picasso paints a series of heads childlike withbold lines. During October Picasso begins painting images of amother and child.The artist is not particularly productive during 1966. In the earlypart of 1966 Picasso produces only some sketches and in Aprilhe begins a series after Jupiter et Thétis by Ingres. For the balanceof the year Picasso does caricatures and sketches on themes fromprevious years.During January of 1967 Picasso creates sketches including a musicianwatermelon eater flutist and man holding a lamb. Picassoalso begins ink washes and oil paintings of a musketeer whichdevelop into a painter who then caresses a model. The musketeersometimes as an artist sometimes with a nude woman becomesa series of paintings in March and April. Between April and JunePicasso designs a number of covers for the book Picasso: Theatre.In June Picasso continues the Serenade at Dawn series. FromJuly through September Picasso draws sketches with a variety ofthemes. In October he makes a group of drawings of a violentand distorted kissing couple.
