The author French poet and painter Marc Sabatier-Leveque began writing this massive poem at the age of 14; he rewrote it when he was 22 and it was published in 1955 thanks to André Malraux. Illustrated with 16 portraits of the author by Pablo Picasso who was the initiator of the subscription and said to the poet: "You are the one who brought French literature out of its Louis-Philippard style." Malraux who considered this text to be "one of the major works of the 20th century" wrote to its young author: "You will be discovered in 30 years." Sabathier-Leveque died at the age of 37 without publishing another book. A scarce title made rare perhaps unique by the author's signature at the top of the half-title page.

Les Éditions De Minuit hardcover

Mourlot 350 Bloch 1017. Lithograph printed in 24 colors. Published in A Los Toros avec Picasso.

The lithographs were issued unsigned for the series A Los Toros avec Picasso and published by Sauret in 1961 in an edition of 125. There was also an edition of 50 signed examples printed from the same lithographic stones by Mourlot Frères at the same time.

The stone for this lithograph was originally drawn in black as were the other three lithographs in the series. However the publisher Andre Sauret asked Picasso if he would add a little color to the image. Picasso had a box of crayons in 24 different colors and used each of them to color this image. Much to his surprise the Mourlot studio printers succeeded in the difficult task of printing all 24 colors plus black. This explains the two dates on this print. The black version was done 6.3.61 and the colors added 21.4.61
Draeger Freres, George Braziller. hardcover

Translated from the French by Patrick Gregory. First edition first printing. Overall a lovely copy with bright and striking illustrations. This book contains works by Picasso on one of his favorite themes bullfighting composed by the artist between July 11 1959 and June 26 1960. One of Picasso's first paintings made when he was eight years old was of a yellow bullfighter Le petit picador jaune and Picasso returned periodically to bullfighting throughout his career most notably in the 1930s and late 1950s. The imaginative force that bullfighting exerted on Picasso is not particularly surprising as he was born in Málaga where bullfights were an integral part of the city's culture hosted at the Plaza de Toros de la Malagueta. Picasso reputedly once said "If I had not been a painter I would have been a bullfighter.". First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included. Illus. by Picasso Pablo.
