The illustrations are accompanied by commentary by Jaime Sabartés 1881 - 1968 an artist writer and lifelong friend of Picasso: "The friendship of Picasso and Sabartés in recent years the artist's secretary goes back more than sixty years to their youth in Barcelona" The Artist and the Book 240.

"All true 'aficionados' are drawn to the bull-ring by the same irrepressible enthusiasm. Each of them is prey to the same desire the same passion: to see his torero 'torear' his one and only 'diestro' the matador of his predilection the being who commands his fervent admiration - often for reasons quite unknown to the aficionado himself. Perhaps it is the matador's elegance his boldness or his courage; perhaps it is his skill with the cape or the 'muleta'." p. 1. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. George Braziller unknown

This volume features 3 single and 4 double gatefold illustrations and includes a detachable 23-page booklet of Picasso's pencil and ink drawings. During the decade after the end of World War II Picasso began to spend more and more time in the Cote d'Azur where he began drawing on the Mediterranean sources that had inspired him in earlier years. Picasso's return to the south marked a return to a family life as well - which in turn inspired him in the studio. In the 1950s his sculpture work evolved and he expanded into ceramics lithography printing and graphic design techniques. Overall a lovely copy with bright and striking illustrations. This book contains works by Picasso on one of his favorite themes bullfighting composed by the artist between July 11 1959 and June 26 1960. One of Picasso's first paintings made when he was eight years old was of a yellow bullfighter Le petit picador jaune and Picasso returned periodically to bullfighting throughout his career most notably in the 1930s and late 1950s. The imaginative force that bullfighting exerted on Picasso is not particularly surprising as he was born in Málaga where bullfights were an integral part of the city's culture hosted at the Plaza de Toros de la Malagueta. Picasso reputedly once said "If I had not been a painter I would have been a bullfighter.". First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included. Illus. by Picasso Pablo.
