18501307Paris: Chalcographie du Louvre Musées Imperiaux. c.1850. Set of 14 copperplate etchings printed on laid paper each numbered within the plate untrimmed. Each plate measuring 28.5 x 22cm sheet measuring 43.5 x 30.5cm and with "Chalcographie du Louvre Musées Imperiaux" blindstamp to the lower margin. Old collector's numbers in pencil to the blank bottom-right corners of the sheets. Condition is very good with some light scattered foxing and marking to the sheet margins occasionally to the plates themselves some marking to the head of sheet of no. 9 and 11 a 3cm tear to the blank foot of sheet of no. 5 and a 2cm tear to the blank top-left margin of sheet of no. 14 framing would largely solve these relatively minor issues. The impressions remain crisp and sharp. A beautiful set of etchings by the French engraver Gérard Audran 1640-1703 reproducing frescoes by Raphael printed from the original plates by the Louvre's chalcography workshop during the mid-nineteenth century.</p><p>In 1517 Agostino Chigi commissioned Raphael to decorate the ground floor loggia of the Villa Farnesina in Rome in which the artist had painted his 'Galatea' a few years before. The series of frescoes which Raphael produced traced the story of Cupid and Psyche a myth derived from the Golden Ass of Apuleius 2nd Century A.D. The present set of etchings first produced c.1662-1690 document each of the fourteen lunettes of the entrance loggia depicting various cupids accompanied by the animals and other assorted attributes representative of the deities who had paid homage to Love.</p><p>The Chalcographie du Louvre was established in 1797 with the purpose of collecting and preserving engraved copperplates as well as for establishing a workshop of skilled printers who would produce new impressions from the original plates on historic presses. Originally made up of the plates from Louis XIV's personal collection 'The King's Cabinet' the Calcography went on to acquire several thousand further plates and is still in operation today. Heavy chipping and wear at edges quarter-sized hole through upper center of both leaves but only a small amount of text actually affected. Moderate tanning and soiling. A scarce 1855 broadside in which Guatemalan caudillo Rafael Carrera addresses Hondurans regarding the perceived malign intentions of their president José Trinidad Cabañas. Honduras with Cabañas at the helm had been in conflict with Guatemala since 1853 and it was Cabañas' stated goal to reunite the states of the defunct Federal Republic of Central America to which end he also invaded Nicaragua in 1854. In this address Carrera states the need to invade Honduras in order to halt the aggressions of Cabañas reiterates his desire for peace and friendship with "true" Hondurans and promises his assistance in reestablishing a reasonable government in their country. It reads in part:<br /> <br /> "En esa contienda las simpaticas del pueblo de Guatemala vecino y hermano vuestro no podian ser dudosas. El General Cabañas no contento con haber estado de mucho tiempo atras fomentado y auxilando la guerra desastrosa de la montaña en esta República invadió á mano armada nuestro territorio no teniendo comprometer la suerte de muchos hondureños arrancados á sus pacífcas ocupaciones. En estas circunstancias habeis vuelto los ojos á Guatemala y requerido su amistosa cooperacion para ayudaros á establecer en Honduras un Gobierno regular que consagre sus esfuerzos á la mejora interior de todos los ramos y al mantenimiento de las buenas relaciones con los Estados vecinos."<br /> <br /> A somewhat tattered copy but not in OCLC. unknown

ARTHUR RACKHAM; T H ROBINSON etc. An extremely attractive set of the Harmsworth magazine in 12 bound volumes. The contemporary cloth bindings reflect the progress of the magazine through its different incarnations from the Harmsworth Magazine through the Harmsworth London Magazine to the London Magazine the latter two printed by The Amalagamated Press. The books are classic Victorian / Edwardian collections with fascinating articles and stories by the popular writers of the day including H G Wells E Nesbit Rafael Sabatini and Cutcliffe Hyne among many others. The bindings are in excellent condition in mint green with gilt and black debossed design creating a uniform binding set on the shelf. There are some variants. The majority of bindings use Arabic numerals for the volume number though with Vols 1 and 2 using Roman numerals hence the numbering goes I II 3 4 etc. The bindings are clean and tight with sharp edges and surprisingly bright and clean cloth. They have clearly been well kept and the high quality China clay paper is white bright and clean with solid attractive bindings. In all this is a lovely set and an excellent example of the high quality magazine format for which the late Victorian / Edwardian era is rightly famous. Offered at £25 per volume plus shipping.
