In-8, beau papier velin filigrané, non ébarbé.Les reproductions du livre d'heures de Simon Vostre ont été gravées, comme nous le précise la préface, par un habile artiste Monsieur Léon Lemaire de la ville de Paris. L'origine de l'Alphabet par Hans Holbein reste fort obscure. Le premier ouvrage dans lequel on signale cet alphabet est une Bible grecque publiée à Strasbourg en 1526. D'autres lettres de la même source se retrouvent utilisées de façon éparse dans plusieurs autres ouvrages. Les lettres sont entremêlées avec d'autres Danses des Morts, mais aussi avec des lettres ornées de toutes sortesLa préface érudite d'Anatole de Montaiglon fait part de ses recherches sur ces prouesses typographiques utilisées ici pour la première fois de manière continue. L'entreprise éditoriale ambitieuse a nécessité la mise en oeuvre la mise en chantier de gravures sur bois reproduisant au plus près les ornements typographiques de Simon Vostre, mais aussi de Hans Holbein. The reproductions of Holbein's initials were done by Heinrich Loedel and each page is given an => exquisite death-themed wood-engraved border by Léon le Maire after designs from a Book of Hours printed by Simon Vostre. The alphabet is represented excluding J and U by magnificent engraved historiated letters five of which are repeated.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Chocolate brown morocco covers framed and panelled in blind with gilt-tooled corner fleurons and gilt strapwork central medallions; spine with blind-ruled raised bands and gilt-stamped title and date and cover fleurons repeated in compartments; turn-ins with wide composite gilt rolls. All edges gilt; striking and distinctive marbled endpapers. => Signed by binder L. 189212597London: George Bell & Sons. Fair with no dust jacket. 1892. Limited Edition. Hardcover. ii 18 ii pp 49 leaves. Limited edition of 500 copies of which this is one in Imperial 16mo. Signature of Harriet Monroe in pencil on the first free end paper. In original publisher's brown cloth with gilt title to front cover spine covering perished but binding holding. Red and black title page 49 copies of woodcuts and a facsimile of the original 1538 French title page. Forty-one of the woodcuts were according to Dobson cut 11 years before 1538 while the remaining 8 were added after that edition. Accompanying each woodcut is a verse in Latin with the antique French below it. Harriet Monroe 1860 1936 was an American editor scholar literary critic poet and patron of the arts and the founding publisher and long-time editor of Poetry magazine which she established in 1912. As a supporter of the poets Wallace Stevens Ezra Pound H. D. T. S. Eliot William Carlos Williams Carl Sandburg Max Michelson and others Monroe played an important role in the development of modern poetry. Interior is in good condition. The tissue protector for the title page is heavily browned and cracking away at the gutter the binding is a bit shaken but otherwise the book is clean and unmarked save for Monroe's signature and a small bibliographic note on the verso of that page. Chacune d'entre elles, hormis la dernière figure, est accompagnée d'un texte imprimé en regard sur un papier vergé fin.
