193197186Westport CT: The Georgian Press 1931. 1931. Good. - Folio 20 inches high by 13 inches wide. Self-wraps simply titled "The Nativity by Albrecht Durer: 1506" at the bottom of the cover page. 4 pages the last being blank on fine cream stock with Dard Hunter's "Dog and Dagger" watermark. Illustrated with a superb 11-1/2 inch high by 7-7/8 inch wide wood engraved reproduction of Albrecht Durer's "The Nativity" printed on a 20 inch high by 13 inch wide fine stock with the text of "The Birth of Christ : According to the Gospel of Saint Luke" printed in black on the facing page with a handsome initial and the colophon printed in red. Very good. <p>"The Nativity engraved on wood in 1506 by Albrecht Durer 1471-1528 is here reproduced in its actual size and has been printed together with the text from Chapter ii of the Gospel according to Saint Luke by Richard W. Ellis at The Georgian Press Westport CT. Christmas : Anno Mcmxxi." Quoted from the colophon.<p>The book designer and printer Richard Williamson Ellis 1895-1982 was inspired by Bruce Rogers to launch his own press in 1924. Initially located in New York Ellis moved The Georgian Press to a renovated barn in Westport Connecticut. During the period from 1924 through 1933 Ellis frequently collaborated with his friends especially the famous typographer Frederic Goudy. Faced with financial difficulties Ellis sold the press to George Macy of the Limited Editions Club and moved to Camden New Jersey with his wife in 1935. He took a position with Haddon Craftsmen and then Kingsport Press in Tennessee. He returned to New York to work as a consulting book printer. He worked for the Curtis Publishing Company in Philadelphia and again subsequently struck out on his own. A master of fine printing he was commissioned by the Free Library of Pennsylvania to produce and print their "Pennsylvania German Fraktur of the Free Library of Philadelphia" shortly before his death.<p>RARE. Here are all of his extant woodcuts a collection of over 300 great works containing all the familiar cuts long treasured by the world's art lovers: the celebrated series on the Life of the Virgin The Apocalypse of John 17 cuts The Great Passion St. Jerome in his Study Samson Fighting the Lion The Fall of Icarus The Six Knots The Men's Bath St. Christopher The Virgin in Glory The Rhinoceros The Last Supper of 1523 illustrations from Dürer's "The Art of Measurement" and from his four books on human proportion and many others including much little-known material. This book is the only available source for many of these works.Although sacred subjects predominate the Holy Family scenes from Christ's life crucifixion etc. the lives of the saints Old Testament episodes many other motifs are treated. There are portraits of prominent men of the ages book illustrations secular and religious coats of arms the celestial and terrestrial globes animals mythological and historical themes etc. The plates are arranged generally in chronological order permitting the reader to view the development of Dürer's art. From out of the gnarled figures and landscapes one can see the emergence of an individualistic style and skill unrivaled in this sphere. An introduction by Campbell Dodgson and a 34-page textual guide to the plates by Dr. Willi Kurth discuss the evidence and controversies surrounding the authenticity of each work citing the opinions of all the important Dürer scholars; they also furnish the reader with the historical background of the cuts and of Dürer's life and times — from the years of apprenticeship in Nuremberg to the last works of 1520–1528.All of the woodcuts are reproduced in excellent detail. This book is indispensable for the professional art historian and critic. To the layman with any aesthetic interests at all it will be a source of stimulation and satisfaction that only great art can provide.</p> Dover Publications hardcover
