Publisher's red cloth gilt decoration and title on front cover and spine.<br/> <br/> A delightful volume of lithographic plates by the Junior Etching Club a prestigious organization instrumental in the revival of etching in late-Victorian England with illustrations by James McNeil Whistler and others.<br/> <br/> 'Passages from Modern English Poets was issued by Day and Son in 1862 in a large octavo. In 1876 another edition in large quarto with etchings transferred to stone and printed as lithographs was published by William Tegg. In this notable volume Millais is represented by Summer Indolence a most graceful study of a girl lying on her back in a meadow with a small child who is wearing a daisy chain seated at her side. Mr. J. McNeill Whistler contributes two delightful landscapes The Angle and A River Scene. "Summer Indolence" by famed Pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millais derives from a figure in Millais's painting "Spring Apple Blossoms." The Etching Revival and Pre-Raphaelite Movement shared many comonalities as new artistic forms in the Victorian Era. These groups held artists in common as well as close ties with literature especially poetry. Surtees in despair at last offered the book in August 1864 to The Field where is was refused. Quite rare in the trade OCLC locates only 2 holdings and despite the British illustrator and authors we could not locate on Worldcat the equivalent UK edition which we find somewhat mystifying. Not the best copy of this book but where will you find another Lippincott hardcover

A beautifully illustrated and hand-colored volume. Pierce Egan 1772-1849 was a British journalist sportswriter and writer on popular culture best-knows work is Life in London first published in 1821. The book was adapted into the stage play Tom and Jerry or Life in London later that year and it became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances in London while at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. Egan turned to the Cruikshank brothers Robert and George for the illustrations. They produced 21 woodcuts and 36 lively and colorful plates to represent the range of characters and situations described in the book. The success of Life in London was so great that the artists could not color the engravings quickly enough for the demand. The book was adapted for the stage later that year and the play Tom and Jerry or Life in London became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances in London while at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. The book was reprinted in 1822 1823 1830 1841 1870 and 1904. Numerous imitations soon appeared namely Carey's Life in Paris Real Life in London Real Life in Ireland et al. Robert Louis Stevenson 1850 - 1894 was a Scottish novelist essayist poet and travel writer who travel broadly and settled in Samoa in 1889 where he was prodigiously productive and where he became involved with local politics and culture gathering native stories and infusing some of his writing with these newfound themes. This first edition of the three short stories is accompanied by a set of engaging illustrations by Gordon Browne 1858 - 1932 and William Hatherell 1855-1928 both prolific illustrators who worked with publishers and magazines. The collection is comprised of three short stories " The Beach of Falesá" "The Bottle Imp" and "The Isle of Voices" and contains some of the author's last writing before his death the following year. The book has 27 plates of illustrations with an index including a color map lithographically printed corresponding to the first story. Binding with some light rubbing and bumping to extremities and hinges of the spine. Some light stains to the front and back boards. Spine sunned. Interior with with starting at the gutters of interior covers. Light age toning to the edges of pages. Spine slightly cocked. Binding in good- interior in good condition overall.
