Vignette on title page. First illustrated edition of this clever social and political satire of France's July Monarchy that had a prodigious success when it was first published in 1843. This volume is splendidly illustrated throughout with 32 full-page wood-engravings and 200 vignettes after drawings by renown French caricaturist Jean Ignace Isidore Grandville generally known by the pseudonym of J. J. Grandville. The illustrator died on 17 March 1847 only a few months after this book was completed. Though the designs of Grandville featured in this volume are occasionally unnatural and absurd they usually display keen analysis of character and marvellous inventive ingenuity and his humour is always tempered and refined by delicacy of sentiment and a vein of sober thoughtfulness. Moderate age wear on binding with spine discolored. Half-title and title page slightly foxed and age-toned along edges. Text in French. Binding in overall good interior in very good condition. J.-J. Jean de La Fontaine 1621-1695 was the most famous French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He is known above all for his Fables which provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe and numerous alternative versions in France and in French regional language. Per inventiva in virtù di alcune trovate che già anticipano soluzioni surrealistiche una delle opere più significative di Grandville dove tra le altre cose si assiste a una sorta di rivolta degli oggetti che nel XIX secolo cominciano ad assediare la società moderna. Questa è l'edizione in parte originale con il più gran numero di illustrazioni poi più volte ristampata. Lievi normali tracce d'uso ma bella copia completa di tutte le tavole e praticamente esente da fioriture se non al verso della prima carta e al frontespizio. Magnifica edizione parzialmente originale di questo capolavoro di Grandville molto imitato che lo consacrerà come il più grande caricaturista francese del suo tempo. Minime mancanze alla cuffia di testa; lievissime spellature alle cerniere volume assolutamente solido e tracce d'uso ai piatti; sporadiche arrossature. Grande ex libris di bella fattura applicato al contropiatto anteriore. Esemplare molto ben conservato. unknown
