Near Fine Slight Fading To Spine Cloth Gilt Still Brilliant; Pencil Ownership Signature Of Paco Lagerstrom Dated March 1955 And Small Ownership Label Of Anton Roshko. In The Original Black Slipcase With Cover Label Printed In Red And Black; Slipcase With Rubbing All Along Right Top And Bottom Open Edges 1/4" Splits Along Two Bottom Open Corners And Tiny Frays At Corners Of The Closed End. Paco Axel Lagerstrom 1914 - 1989 Was An Applied Mathematician And Aeronautical Engineer. He Was Trained Formally In Mathematics But Worked For Much Of His Career In Aeronautical Applications. He Was Known For Work In Applying The Method Of Asymptotic Expansion To Fluid Mechanics Problems.3 Several Of His Works Have Become Classics Including "Matched Asymptotic Expansions: Ideas And Techniques". In 1946 Lagerstrom Was Recruited By Hans Liepmann To The Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory At Caltech.5 He Was Later Promoted To Professor Of Aeronautics In 1952 And Professor Of Applied Mathematics In 1967 Having Departed Only Briefly To The University Of Paris In 1960-1961 As Visiting Professor On A Guggenheim Fellowship. His Book "Laminar Flow Theory" Initially Published In 1964 In The Theory Of Laminar Flows Edited By F.K.Moore Is Still Considered As The Standard Textbook For Fluid Mechanics. Anatol Roshko 1923-2017 Was The Theodore Von Kármán Professor Of Aeronautics Emeritus At The California Institute Of Technology Pasadena Ca. Roshko Is Known For His Contributions To Gas Dynamics. He Along With H. W. Liepmann Is The Co-Author Of The Widely Used Textbook "Elements Of Gasdynamics". He Has Made Research Contributions To Problems Of Separated Flow; Bluff-Body Aerodynamics; Structure Of Turbulent Shear Flow. He Completed His Undergraduate Education At The University Of Alberta With A B.Sc. Degree In Engineering Physics In 1945 Received The M.Sc. Degree From Caltech In 1947 And The Ph.D. In 1952. Most Of His Academic Career Has Been At Caltech Where He Was The Theodore Von Karman Professor Of Aeronautics Emeritus At The Time Of His Death. He Was Also A Member Of The National Academy Of Engineering; A Fellow Of The American Institute Of Aeronautics And Astronautics The American Physical Society The American Academy Of Arts And Sciences And An Honorary Fellow Of The Indian Academy Of Sciences. Roshko Received Fluid Dynamics Prize By The American Physical Society Aps In 1987. He Was Also Awarded The Timoshenko Medal In 1999. 19692481New York: A Helen and Kurt Wolff Book/ Harcourt Brace & World Inc 1969. Quarter cloth paper boards. Very Good. FIRST US EDITION SIGNED BY AUTHOR with TLS & hand-written postcard. 8vo. Quarter green cloth spine lettered and decorated in black and green grey boards with black-stamped decoration to upper board. Green top edge mostly faded. Pushing to spine ends bands of sunning to board edges dint to bottom edge. Signed by Bryher to ffep with "Best wishes from" else clean and tight. Two-page folded TLS and hand-written postcard featuring puffins laid in. In Paul Bacon's original illustrated dust jacket: spine gently darkened gently toned and soiled edges creased closed tear to rear panel. Still a lovely tight copy of Bryher's final novel. Unusual especially signed and with a TLS and hand-written postcard. Seemingly Mr J H Fall's copy the addressee of both the TLS and postcard. On Villa Kenwin-headed paper and written shortly after its publication Bryher discusses her novel advising Fall that "You never need feel you have to like the book." The letter also covered her liking of Akenside the change in approach to the T.L.S. and that she'd take In Aleppo Once "if it seems at all interesting". Dated three years later the postcard briefly outlines the novelist's travel plans: from a "wonderful week in the Scillies" she returned to London and then on to Kenwin: even in her seventies the novelist continued to travel. Bryher had deep emotional ties to both Switzerland the location of her Bauhaus-style home Villa Kenwin and the Isles of Scilly where she owned a daffodil farm and from which she had borrowed her adopted name. Perhaps indicating a note of formality both documents are signed "Winifred Bryher". Bryher and H.D. had long used Bumpus for sourcing books: perhaps Fall was a bookseller A Helen and Kurt Wolff Book/ Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc hardcover
