Collection of ten brightly coloured tall oblong colour advertisement printed cards probably for displaying in a shop or shop windows 38.5 x 10.5cm accompanied by thirty-one colour printed labels 9.3 x 16cm. All in very good unused condition. A lovely example of commercial design from the pre-WWII period. These colourful shop signs and labels advertise a nerve pain relief liniment called Itamitōru. The Japanese name literally means “Taking pains out” combining the Chinese character for itami pain with the katakana spelling of tōru to take out conveying both the product’s purpose and suggesting an impression of a Western-imported remedy. <br>The label features an eye-catching graphic design including illustrations of an arm and a leg. It is printed in both Japanese and English and claims that the liniment contains chemicals produced by Swiss Basel & Co. Ltd. The product was promoted as a remedy for a wide range of ailments including rheumatism nerve pain stiff shoulders headaches toothache and insect bites. . 天明堂. [Tenmeidō]. unknown
