One of 240 copies duodecimo size 126 pp. "Woodwork" contains twenty-one wood engravings of tools by the inimitable Eric Gill 1882-1940; a highly regarded printmaker sculptor and typographer as well as a complicated man Gill provided illustrations for numerous fine press publications by the Golden Cockerel Press and the Saint Dominic's Press as well as with Pepler under the imprint of the St. Dominic's Press. An informative look at the art of carpentry by craftsman-woodworker Arthur Romney Green 1872-1945 who like Gill and Pepler was influenced by William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement. Although the book is stated as "Volume I" no further volumes were issued. ___DESCRIPTION: Brown paper wraps black lettering on the front wrap fore- and bottom edges uncut title page with black-and-white wood engraving a total of thirty-one wood engravings in the text throughout: twenty-one wood engravings of carpentry tools by Eric Gill ten wood engravings by R. John Beedham; Caslon O. F. type Batchelor handmade paper duodecimo size 7.75" by 5" pagination: i-iv v-xvi 1 2-110 one of 450 copies this number 161. ___CITATION: Better than good with clean wraps a strong square text block the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; overall minor edgewear to the wraps some loss to the paper at the spine exposing parts of the gatherings however text block still solid small loss to the bottom fore-edge corner of the title page. ___CITATIONS: Gill no. 269; Taylor and Sewell no. Octavo 7 3/4 x 6 1/4". 58 859 49pp. Original full blind-stamped parchment with handwritten lettering to spine. Raised bands. Additional engraved title by Dutch Golden Age painter and engraver Gerard Hoet. Title page in red and black lettering. Title vignette. Decorative head- tailpieces and initials. Originally published in 1692 this work is the second edition of Hermann Witsius' compendium of religious works. It includes eight full-page engravings by Jan van den Aveelen including four double-page. Six of these appear in the text on Jewish law and ritual "de Tabernaculi Levitici mysteriis" and one includes an overflap showing the Ark of the Covenant. At the end of the Preface has been added a large engraved portrait of the author by Pieter van Gunst after a painting by Gerard Hoet. The portrait is dated 1700 and comes from a later edition of Witsius' "Miscellaneorum Sacrorum" published in Amsterdam and Utrecht in 1700 by Francisci Halmae François Halma. Also includes an extensive Index at rear. Minor foxing and darkening to binding. Ex-library bookplate on inside of front cover. Minor and sporadic clear water-staining at upper lower or outer margin of pages never affecting lettering. Slight rippling to pages due to damp exposure. Otherwise pages are extremely clean and white. Text in Latin with some Hebrew and Greek. Binding in overall good to very good interior in good to very good condition. About the author: Hermann Witsius 1636-1708 was "Professor of Divinity in the Universities of Franeker Utrecht and Leyden. A brilliant and devout student he was fluent in Latin Greek and Hebrew by the age of 15 when he entered the University of Utrecht. He was ordained at 21 and served in several pastorates filling both the pulpit and the academic chair over the course of his life" Encyclopedia Britannica. Apud Johannem Wolters hardcover

In this essay Eric Gill 1882-1940 discusses the significance of clothes in society and argues for a more egalitarian approach to clothing; for example Gill advocates the suitability of men's clothing trousers for women as a way to liberate the sexes and create a more equal society. Major . . . ." 8 15 1 p. 53 leaves of plates 1 leaf with copper-engraved dedication to Lavinia Countess Spencer signed Hewitt 52 leaves of mounted plates numbered 1-60 drawn and engraved by G.R. Lewis; 29 cm. Contemporary half red morocco with marbled paper over boards. Six spine compartments between gilt-rules and raised bands with gilt-tooled decoration. Black morocco spine label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title "Lewis's Etchings. Red morocco label on front board with double gilt-ruled border gilt corner rosettes and title "Etchings of the Physiognomy Manners & Character of the People of France & Germany." All page edges marbled to match boards and endpapers. Remains of a small circular label on front fixed endpaper reading "Abbey" along lower edge. The plates were issued for insertion in T.F. Dibdin's Bibliographical Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany 1821. Included are directions for placing the plates in Dibdin's work. Lewis made hundreds of drawings while accompanying Thomas Frognall Dibdin on his tour of France and Germany some of which were used to illustrate Dibdin's book. A disagreement about how much Dibdin owed Lewis for the drawings developed after the tour and the additional plates presented here were undoubtedly published by Lewis to generate some extra income from his work. In Very Good Condition: leather and boards are rubbed most heavily at head of spine and corners; corner of title page lightly soiled; light foxing primarily affecting the leaves on which the plates are mounted rather than the plates themselves; plates are clean and crisp.
