Quarto soft cover in a hand-crafted portfolio made out of hand-made paper original Japanese thread hand-sewn binding. The portfolio has tears on the edges with a wooden clasp. Forty seven lyrical poems printed on translucent paper 102 pages of colourful woodcut prints on handmade Japanese paper 54 folded prints including the covers. Signed by the artist and the poet on the colophon page. With an original prospectus of Stones to Harvest. Laid in loosely is the original contract between the artist and the publisher. Very good condition. A fantastic collaboration of art and poetry. Henry Beissel a Germany born poet writer and translator survived the second World War as a youth and emigrated to Canada in 1951. This collaborative work between him and Dale Alpen-Whiteside a Manitoba-born painter and sculptor now residing on Hornby Island in British Columbia. This work reflects the influence of moraine landscape in Eastern Ontario on their works. The poems are divided into four sections as i. seeds ii. roots iii. flowers and iv. leaves setting out four seasons in a striking harmony with warm and cold colours used in the prints. 1991 Ayorama Publications paperback

About the author: Hermann Witsius 1636-1708 was "Professor of Divinity in the Universities of Franeker Utrecht and Leyden. The author Zacharias Topelius 1818-1898 through his work as a writer journalist and professor of history played a pivotal role in the creation of the Finnish identity in the 19th century. En Resa i Finland Travel in Finland employs illustrations by the most famous Finnish artists of the time. The beautiful steel-engraved plates are based on original paintings by Berndt Lindholm A. v. Becker B. Reinhold Hjalmar Munsterhjelm Karl Emanuel Jansson Robert Wilhelm Ekman J. Knutson W. Holmberg Oslar Kleineh and Albert Edelfelt. Originally issued in parts in 1872 and 1873 this copy was apparently taken to the binder without the title page and 8 preliminary pages. The text is in Swedish. The plates were engraved by A. Weger and are captioned in Finnish Swedish and French. This is the first edition not the modern reprint. In Very Good Condition: corners rubbed; cover slightly soiled; spine faded; corners of a few leaves faintly dampstained not impacting image or text; light foxing on a few plates; otherwise clean and bright. One of 500 copies folio size pp. The Golden Cockerel Press came together in autumn of 1920 at a time when post-World War I society was ushering in a renaissance of creative minds including another renaissance of the printing press as the artist's tool similar to that of William Morris and the arts and crafts printers of the previous century. The press worked with many notable artists including Eric Gill Blair Hughes-Stanton Robert Gibbings and the artist for this work Clifford Webb. <br /> <br /> Clifford Cyril Webb 1895-1972 studied art and is best known today for his wood engravings. He was a founder-member of the Society of Wood Engravers and "was a prominent figure in the group of engravers whobrought about the revival of wood engraving in the 1920s and benefited from the encouragement of Robert Gibbings and the Golden Cockerel Press" n.b. quote from Webb's entry in Horne "The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators" p. 437. <br /> <br /> Per the bibliographical entry for this work "it is surprising that no complete translation of this unique eye-witness account of the First Crusade had ever been published in England before.
