Like Empire and Louis Seize it was in essence a neo-classical style but there its similarities end. For Biedermeier furniture was the product of a radical upheaval. It was the outcome for a striving for comfort and innovation among the bourgeoisie of Germany and Austria who were laying the foundations for the industrial age in their countries and it was made by ordinary craftsmen living beyond the confines of the court. A major inspiration technical and artistic was England. Dr. Himmelheiber's book which was commissioned for the Furniture Monographs series is the first comprehensive treatment of the subject to appear in either English or German. Illustrated with 118 monochrome plates and 4 plates in color. <br>115pp 1.79lb 10.0x7.8x0.8in Faber & Faber hardcover
