The author provides much information and instruction to immigrants to the United States during mid nineteenth century extolling the virtues of life in the American democracy. Some of the topics covered are topography demographics government and laws occupations currency and a section devoted to travel directions by rail and ferry to specific destinations. A bittersweet collection for the author who had received the proofs a few days after the first anniversary of VA's death writing in her diary: "I sat at them increasingly aware that I was alone that she would never hold the book – and remembering the circumstances when they were written more carefree for all are of that decade; some like the Green Torso embodying our sad lot.
