190942930New York: Ferlag "Kibets 1909. 1st Edition. Original publisher’s binding Folio newspaper. Complete first volume Starting with Vol I Nr 1 of “Der Kibitser†Dec. 15 1908 renamed and renumbered first as Vol I Nr 1 Jan 22 1909 of “Der Groyser Kibetser The big kibetzer†with the following issue of Feb 5 numbered as "3" to correctly follow from the first issue and then with Vol I Nr 6 March 19 1909 onward as “Der Groyser Kundes The Big Stick†or “The Big Prankster.†Incidentally the other set of this volume we examined also did not have a Nr 2 so we are confident this is complete as issued.
One centerfold cartoon by Zuni Maud see image features "Der Kaptialistisher Tayfel"--the Capitalist Devil–holding back a "mother" by the hair to stop her from interfering as "baby's milk-bottle" is drained off by the "milk-trust" cat.
The caption reads "The Capitalist Devil: - to the mother: Never mind madam all in English in Hebrew letters you go to the factory the milk-trust will take good care of your baby."
This cartoon-laden periodical was a New York City Yiddish language satirical bi- weekly which ran from 1908 until 1927.
The humor paper was issued biweekly this volume for its first 20 months and then weekly after that. OCLC also references another Vol I Nr 1 from April 15 1908 a special S´imhes` Toyreh Simchas Torah issue but this may have been a one-off.
Founded by the humorist Yosef Tunkel or Der Tunkeler his pen name meaning 'The Dark One' the paper was taken on by Jacob Marinoff when Tunkel left to work for an established paper in Warsaw. The paper consciously set itself up in opposition to the serious Yiddish-language press of the time such as the socialist Forverts.Naturally more traditional religious Judaism did not escape its satire: The later 1915 "Christmas" edition included a parodic conversation between Jesus and the prophet Elijah.
Despite its irreverent attitude to everything it also published poetry by Di Yunge "The Young Ones" poets such as Moyshe-Leyb Halpern and Zuni Maud. At its height it had a circulation of 35000 but folded in 1927 due to flagging sales. Der Groyer Kunds is highlighted in this recent talk by Yiddish comics scholar Eddie Portnoy on the reactions in the Yiddish press to restrictions on Jewish immigration to the US: https://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/collections/archival-recordings/recorded- programs/ybcr-nybc-ybcr-1048/door-slams-shut-reactions-yiddish-press-immigr ation .
SUBJECTS: Yiddish wit and humor -- Periodicals. OCLC: 28297536. Most holdings appear to be fragmentary and do not include these issues. Issue 18 with torn cover. In final issue the bottom margin suffers some loss to the final leaves none to the dramatic front cover though. Damaged boards are loose and most issues are coming loose though the quality paper used has remaind strong and bright much better than standard newsprint would have. Important graphic Yiddish humor from the great migration period. Dramatic and displayable! BK5 YID-43-9A-LEX. [New York]: Ferlag "Kibets unknown

134247The only issue missing from the run is January 1946. Two issues December 1935 and January 1938 are water-damaged and the leaves are stuck together. Another two issues June 1935 and July 1935 have the top right-hand corners affected by water and the leaves cannot be separated without risking minor damage to the text. The issue for August 1935 was similarly affected by water; its leaves have now been separated with minimal paper damage which includes short tears to the leading edges of a few leaves. Four numbers in 1954 and 1955 have clear tape repairs to the covers confined mainly to the spines. For the rest there are some trifling cover blemishes mainly chips and tiny tears but overall the condition is excellent. As a bonus all 24 issues from June 1959 to May 1961 are included in the lot.
This influential Australian magazine commenced publication in November 1934 and appeared monthly apart from two bi-monthly issues July-August 1972 and June-July 1974 for more than forty years. November and December 1948 are Volume 14 Numbers 13 and 14 so from January 1949 each volume represents a calendar year. The earliest issues are subtitled 'Australia and the South Seas'. From January 1936 this becomes 'Geographic Magazine. Australia and the South Seas'. From March 1937 to October 1938 it becomes simply 'Geographic Magazine'. From November 1938 to November 1939 it is 'Australia's Geographic Magazine'; this drops out between December 1930 and July 1940 before being taken up again until July 1946. From August 1946 this becomes 'Journal of the Australian Geographical Society' and from May 1947 'Australian Geographical Magazine'.
It remained so until the first colour issue appeared in January 1959 when for two issues only it reverted to 'Journal of the Australian Geographical Society'. It went without a subtitle until November 1961; it then became 'Australia's Way of Life Magazine' until January 1971 apart from October to December 1970 when it was 'The Australian Travel Magazine'. From February 1971 it became 'Australia's Travel Magazine' and from November 1971 to May 1972 Volume 38 Number 5 it was 'Australia's Travel and Leisure Magazine'. There may not have been an issue for June 1972 but there was a double issue for July-August 1972; the journal effectively ceased publication in July 1974. Although Volume 41 Number 1 appeared in January 1978 it failed to stimulate demand.
It is fair to say that the changing subtitles in the latter years reflected a change in the quality of the material published in the magazine but all the best years - before the introduction of colour - are to be found in this run. Contributors include many household names: Ion Idriess Frank Clune Mary Durack Ernestine Hill Percy Tarlton Rayment Donald F. Thomson Eleanor Dark H.A. Lindsay Charles Mountford Arthur Upfield Charles Chauvel . There is much Indigenous and North Australian content and the photographic illustrations are of lasting significance. Approximately 300 issues. unknown

Includes all Tarkington contributions to this periodical. All published with the exception of two issues vol. I #'s 5-6 of a little magazine founded and edited by Robert T. "Slim" Sloss Tarkington's friend and Princeton classmate class of 1893 although Tarkington didn't graduate due to insufficient credits from enjoying college to much. "Booth Tarkington held the honorary position of staff artist and …contributed steadily to the magazine under the nom-de-plume of "Cecil Woodford." The issue for September 1896 is opened to the famous 'Letter of Regrets Left at Giles's Coffee-House; to be Given by the Waiter to Mr. Richard Rakell Sir Thomas Wilding or Lord Townbrake" a poem in ten quatrains…Perhaps the most ambitious of these John-a Dreams pieces also in the eighteenth-century literary form was the one-act comedy "Kisses for Marjorie." Tradition recounts that one of the drawings for this… inspired him to create another story into which the characters could be fitted. This story was Monsieur Beaucaire."-An Exhibition of Booth Tarkington's Works in the Treasure Room of the Princeton University Library March-April 1946 p. 8.

There are only five Tarkington contributions to earlier periodicals. Most of those are slim indeed and those from his college days have been described by an early biographer see below as "genteel." His contributions here pre-date his first book The Gentleman from Indiana 1900 by three years and all are uncollected. Here are The Proud Lover signed "Cecil Woodford" August 1896; A Letter of Regrets signed "Cecil Woodford" written and illustrated by Tarkington September 1896; The Kisses of Marjorie and The Stupid People both signed "Cecil Woodford" written and illustrated by Tarkington both December 1896.

The Kisses of Marjorie a Play in One Scene pp. 147-157 is Tarkington's first published play his "first effort as a dramatist since his college days."-Currie. It has three illustrations by the author two of which are inserted plates. Robert Cortes Holliday has a lot of interesting things to say about John-a-Dreams in his Booth Tarkington 1918 pp. 31-37 the text of which is available on-line. He describes the wrappers thusly: "It was aesthetically bound in paper varying with each issue sometimes the kind of paper in which meat is wrapped sometimes in the kind which used to be 'laid' under carpets. Holliday gives a fine synopsis of Kisses for Marjorie a comedy laid in a rose garden in Philadelphia in 1778 involving two Revolutionary War officers seeking Marjorie's affections one a Captain in the Continental Army aide-de-camp to Light Horse Harry Lee the other a Major of His British Majesty's Foot. The play was later presented by The Dramatic Club of Indianapolis February 11 1902 in which Tarkington took part in all four performances; printed in The Indianapolis Sunday Sentinel March 9 1902; and produced again at The Little Theatre Indianapolis March 18 1916.

Included is a copy of the Prospectus"Vol. 1 No. 0." 1924192598Tokyo: Kokusai Johosha June 1924. Art Nouveau meets the new Japanese woman First edition capturing the movement towards a new modern woman that dominated Japanese culture after the First World War. This issue is decorated with a colour woodblock print by Beardsley who was inspired by Japanese art and a print by the prominent painter and illustrator Takehisa Yumeji. Fujin Gurafu's was first released in May 1924 and continued publication until late 1928. Its design was based on the French magazine Art Goût Beauté with a large print on the front wrapper. The example on the front of this issue was adapted from Beardsley's The Mirror of Music 1896. The articles range from introductions to Western cuisine spotlights on women-run businesses in Tokyo a profile of the American billiards champion Clara Catherine Haywood and multiple short stories. During the economic boom of the Taisho period Western culture began to more outwardly influence Japanese trends in fashion literature and art. One social trend was the emergence of the "modern girl" a young woman who read literature entered the workforce cut her hair in Western styles and participated in European and American trends. Many magazines were published to cater to this market often inspired heavily by European mostly French examples. Folio. With 33 photographic plates 9 colour 4 sepia 20 half-tone colour woodblock print by Takehisa Yumeji and 7 photographic illustrations 6 in colour tipped-in as issued sepia photographic illustrations in text; 2 pp. sheet music text printed in brown black and blue text in Japanese. 520 pages. Black and white illustrations. Text in French, English, German and a fourth language which is presumably Yugoslavian. Some Russian may also be mixed in. The language used seems to depend upon that of the contributor. Contains a wealth of technical content, the bulk of which appears to be in German and French. Includes reprint of an 1892 Electrical Engineer article on "The Tesla Multiphase Motors" plus "Nikola Tesla: The Problem of increasing human energy" reprinted from The Century Magazine, June 1900, 'The Tesla Patents' from Electrical Review, September 19, 1900 and much more. Index card laid in states this copy was presented by Comite yougoslave de l'URSI to Professor Charles. R. Burrows, whose signature appears atop front flyleaf. Printed on poor quality paper which has become embrittled, chipped and yellowed, particularly at extremities. Binding extremely fragile. Please Note: pages 6 through 10 missing. This may not be too dramatic a loss as the Table of Contents omits pages 1-8 and first lists page 9 which may have contained the Preface in Russian. Some pages uncut. Front cover and all pages prior to page 17 loose but present aside from pages listed above. Page 519-150 and back cover loose but present. Although strictly a Reading Copy, this remains a rare and substantial Tesla reference. Book

There is occasional spotting throughout the text and to the odd plate. About three of the plates from the later volumes have a moderate crease. Some minor wear at heads and extremities of volumes yet an appealing set. A run of this length is seldom seen. unknown
