1924192598Tokyo: Kokusai Johosha June 1924. Art Nouveau meets the new Japanese woman First edition capturing the movement towards a new modern woman that dominated Japanese culture after the First World War. This issue is decorated with a colour woodblock print by Beardsley who was inspired by Japanese art and a print by the prominent painter and illustrator Takehisa Yumeji. Fujin Gurafu's was first released in May 1924 and continued publication until late 1928. Its design was based on the French magazine Art Goût Beauté with a large print on the front wrapper. The example on the front of this issue was adapted from Beardsley's The Mirror of Music 1896. The articles range from introductions to Western cuisine spotlights on women-run businesses in Tokyo a profile of the American billiards champion Clara Catherine Haywood and multiple short stories. During the economic boom of the Taisho period Western culture began to more outwardly influence Japanese trends in fashion literature and art. One social trend was the emergence of the "modern girl" a young woman who read literature entered the workforce cut her hair in Western styles and participated in European and American trends. Many magazines were published to cater to this market often inspired heavily by European mostly French examples. Folio. With 33 photographic plates 9 colour 4 sepia 20 half-tone colour woodblock print by Takehisa Yumeji and 7 photographic illustrations 6 in colour tipped-in as issued sepia photographic illustrations in text; 2 pp. sheet music text printed in brown black and blue text in Japanese. Original buff paper wrappers wire-stitched and glued into wrappers as issued 4 holes punched along spine as issued wrappers lettered and bordered with repeating squares in black colour woodblock print by Beardsley mounted on front wrapper rear wrapper decorated with publisher's vignette. Overall lightly toned spine split at ends but stable offsetting front tipped-in prints at rear contents otherwise bright: a very good copy. unknown
