26363‘Friday’: no place or date. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. On first leaf of a bifolium the second leaf of which carries the wafer and address to ‘Mr / at / Hurst & Robinson / 90 Cheapside’. In good condition lightly aged with folds for postage and strip of tape from mount adhering to the second leaf. Signed ‘William Maginn’. The name of the recipient is not clear either beneath the signature on in the address. Begins: ‘Knight presumably the publisher Charles Knight 1791-1873 has not yet published the book which I have of course only by his sufferance in sheets. I fear that a review of it before publication would be considered a breach of faith.’ He explains that he has ‘all the materials ready for a review’ which he could complete ‘at a day’s notice’. He must however ask ‘Knight.’ when it is to be published. Concludes: ‘Any other work I could review I shall gladly engage in.’ ‘Friday’: no place or date. unknown
17761Without place or date. London Circa 1826 . 1p. 12mo. In fair condition on aged and worn paper. Another hand - presumably that of the recipient - has written the word 'Printer' at the head of the page and docketted the reverse 'Maginn with Lockharts Greek Bubble' the anonymous poem 'The Greek Bubble' published in 1826 is in fact said to be the work of J. Thompson. The letter reads: 'Dear Sir Inclosed is a review of a poem by a friend of mine who I believe is an acquaintance of yours. If you could make room for it tomorrow you would much oblige me. Arrange the review yr. own way. I am Dear Sir Yours faithfully W M.' The signature is underlined twice. 'Dr. Maginn' in a third hand is at the foot of the page. Without place or date. [ London? Profusely illustrated magazine of short stories and articles. 80 pages of content and 24 pages of ads. 9.5" x 6.5" color wraps. Contains racist and colonial imagery and text. Cover story is "A Man-hunt in Jamaica" by J.H. Harvey Clark and the accompanying illustration shows an angry-looking Black man peering from the mouth of a cave a cocked gun in his hand. The majority of the art and writing in this magazine depict statuesque white men in conflict with African Ecuadorian Australian and Papuan Black men. One page contains a photo and an update on the hoaxer Louis de Rougemont who spun improbable tales of adventuring such as riding turtles and ruling over an indigenous population as a god. The photoportrait shows him in extreme old age. The magazine's wraps are detached from the textblock and edgeworn with a small chip at the heel. Otherwise in good condition. unknown
