He has historically been credited with the discovery of oxygen. During his lifetime, Priestley's considerable scientific reputation rested on his invention of soda water, his writings on electricity, and his discovery of several airs (gases). Priestley's science was integral to his theology, and he consistently tried to fuse Enlightenment rationalism with Christian theism. His committed Christian Unitarian beliefs got him into enormous trouble in England and he fled to America, finally settling in the woods of Northumberland, PA. where he is buried. Tout comme Nicephore Gregoras, Theodore Dexios, moine et probablement aussi pretre, fut condamne au concile de 1351, ou, sous l'oeuil bienveillant de l'empereur Jean VI Cantacuzene, la doctrine de Gregoire Palamas avait ete officiellement reconnue. Pendant les annees qu'il passa en prison, dans l'attente d'un appel qui n'aboutit jamais, Dexios redigea un long discours, denoncant aprement le parti pris dont l'empereur avait fait preuve des avant le concile. Au debut de 1355, apres l'abdication forcee de Jean VI, Theodore retrouva sa liberte mais son bonheur fut de courte duree puisque, peu apres, le front anti-Palamite qui jusque-la avait ete assez solide, se divisa sur la question de la nature de la lumiere que les apotres avaient vue lors de la Transfiguration. Dexios maintenait que cette lumiere ne venait pas de l'exterieur mais emanait du Christ lui-meme; d'autres lui reprochaient de ne pas vouloir admettre qu'il s'agissait d'une lumiere creee et de se rapprocher ainsi de l'ennemi commun, Gregoire Palamas. Touche par ces critiques, Dexios s'est defendu dans deux longues lettres et un traite de dimensions plus modestes. Les manuscrits ne donnent pas le nom de l'auteur ni du discours d'appel ni des trois ecrits dans lesquels il expose son differend avec ses anciens partisans, mais M. Polemis a apporte de nouvelles preuves en faveur de l'attribution a Theodore Dexios. Inconnues jusqu'a ce jour a quelques extraits pres, les oeuvres de ce dernier permettent une autre approche du concile de 1351 et du conflit qui mit rompit l'unanimite au sein de l'opposition anti-Palamite. Ajoutons que le recit d'une visite inattendue de ceux qui partageaint son opinion et venaient d'apprendre les reproches qu'on lui faisait, est d'une vivacite surprenante et temoigne du talent litteraire de Dexios. James published Latin Infancy Gospels, identified by him in two related but not identical manuscripts (one the British Library Arundel 404; the other from Hereford), together with a parallel text from the Irish manuscript known as the Leabhar Breac. Later researches brought to light more manuscripts of this Latin work, and also of the Irish text. James recognized that his apocryphal Latin Infancy text was compiled from a combination of the Protevangelium of James and a hitherto unknown text which he named "The Source". Recent research has identified a full Latin translation of the Protevangelium of James. A hitherto unrecognized Irish Infancy Narrative has also been identified in the Dublin manuscript known as the Liber Flavus Fergusiorum. A deep study of this related tradition was called for. This has been carried out over the past ten years by an Irish team in conjunction with Professor Daniel Kaestli and AELAC. The fruits of this labour are published in these two volumes. Volume 13 has a general introduction with a historical sketch of New Testament apocrypha in Ireland and a history of research on the subject. This is followed by a comparison of the Infancy Narratives in the Leabhar Breac and the Liber Flavus Fergusiorum. There are special introductions to these Infancy texts, followed by critical editions of the Irish texts, accompanied by English translations and rich annotation. Next there is similar treatment of the Irish versified Narrative (from ca. 700) of the Childhood Deeds of Jesus (commonly known as the Infancy Narrative (or Gospel) of Thomas. There is then (in volume 14, but with continuous pagination) the edition and translation of an Irish thirteenth-century poem with elements from Infancy Narratives, and both Latin and Irish texts on the wonders at Christ's birth, accompanied by translations and notes. The edition of the Irish material is followed by a critical edition of the full Arundel and Hereford forms of the Infancy Narrative (here referred to as the "J Compilation"), together with a detailed study of all the questions relating to this work. The volume concludes with a critical edition (by Rita Beyers) of the Latin text of the Protevangelium of James, accompanied by a detailed study of the work.. The work contains a detailed study of the Latin translations of the Protevangelium of James and the transmission of this work in the West. The "J Compilation" (a combination of the Protevangelium and texts of Pseudo-Matthew) can be traced back in manuscript transmission to ca. 800, and must have originated some time earlier. Behind it stands an earlier "I ("I" for Irish) Compilation" without influence from Pseudo-Matthew, the form found in the Irish witnesses. It is argued that M. R. James's "Source" may be of Judaeo-Christian origin and may really be the Gospel of the Nazoreans. Among the indexes there is a list of all the Irish words found in the texts. This edition of the Irish and related Latin texts is a major contribution to the study of the apocryphal Infancy Narratives. It should also be of particular interest to Celtic scholars, to students of Irish ecclesiastical learning, and in general to all medievalists. Languages: English.

Le Thesaurus Lactantii parait immediatement apres le Thesaurus sancti Cypriani: deux africains si differentes, le premier, homme de lettres ne peu avant le martyre du second, homme d'action. Comme le note Le Professeur Tombeur dans l'introduction, "l'importance de l'oeuvre de Lactance, n'echappe a personne, quel que soit le jugement que l'on porte sur cet auteur, voir les sentiments qu'il suscite. Lactance est assurement une figure controversee qui seduit les uns et a tendance a en rebuter d'autres: il est en tout cas incontournable. Son interet reside notamment dans la rehabilitation des auteurs paiens et dans l'affirmation de la legitimite de la poesie pour acceder au message chretien. Toutefois, on l'a tellement qualifie de "Ciceron chretien", qu'on risque de ne pas le voir tel que le relevent ses "ipsissima uerba". This work, which purportedly records a revelation of the mysteries of the cosmos uttered in angelic language by the soul of the apostle Philip, is characterized by the vividness of its imagery and the rich diversity of its content. Besides providing the most conservative version of the text, preserved in the Book of Lismore, the book supplies on facing pages a full critical edition of the second recension, found in four further manuscripts. Both versions are accompanied by translation. An introduction traces the text's transmission from the time of its composition down to the final flowering of the Irish scribal tradition in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; undertakes to identify its sources in earlier apocalyptic and cosmological literature; and subjects it to an in-depth linguistic analysis in order to place the question of its date in a clearer light. The second volume of the Bibliotheca Basiliana Vniversalis covers all the extant mss, translations and editions of Basil of Caesarea's Homiliae morales, and more than 300 homiletic type adaptations. In addition, it provides descriptions of a number of the mss and editions of the letters that were left out volume one, and of all the editions and translations both of the homilies and the letters from ca.1470 to the present. Besides the native tongue of Basil, some twenty other languages are represented. Throughout an attempt has been made at correcting some of the descriptions of the sixteenth- century composite editions which the homilies share with the letters and the ascetica. Also in this volume have been included many mss, editions and translations of the Vita s. Basilii of Ps.-Amphilochius (CPG 3253), the Laudatio of Ps.Ephraem (BHG 246) and the Laudatio of Ioannes XIII Glykys, Patriarch of Constantinople (1315-1319; BHG 262h) even when they were found in mss containing no works of Basil. The method employed in this volume is very similar to that adopted in the first volume. In the first three chapters all the corpora of the Homiliae and the Hexaemeron are described, in Greek and in eight ancient languages into which Basil has been translated, namely Arabic, Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopic, Georgian, Latin, Old Slavonic and Syriac. Chapters Four to Ten are home to some 6000 mss written both in Greek (Classical en Demotic) and the eight languages. The mss are housed in some 400 libraries whose locations span from the Atlantic Ocean to the Volga River. The Sermon provides guidelines for historical criticism that apply to the sermon genre. Hieronymus von Prag, Magister der Universitaten von Paris, Koln, Heidelberg und Prag, ist durch Leben und Wirkung untrennbar mit seinem Freund Johannes Hus verbunden. Beide wurden als unverbesserliche Ketzer auf dem Konzil von Konstanz verurteilt und 1415 und 1416 kurz nacheinander verbrannt.
