Hardback, XXX+520 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503048314. Barabudur, the most magnificent monument in Java, Indonesia, is a colossal structure justly regarded as a veritable wonder by the whole world. This noble architecture, built in the early ninth century A.D. consists of nine gradualy receding terraces, three uppermost ones being encircled by rings of stupas, each containing an image of the Buddha within a perforated framework. The five lower terraces are encircled by four successive galleries which contain eleven series of sculptured panels depicting the life of the Buddha and other Buddhist stories. The total number of sculptured panels in the galleries is about 1500. Not only this massive grandeur but the fine quality of the immense decorations, extensive relief sculptures and the numerous images of the Buddha deeply impress any visitor. The combination of massive quantity and fine quality invests Barabudur with a unique character. It has hardly any parallel in the world, and it may be truly remarked of its artists that 'they conceived like giants and finished like jewellers'. The life of the Buddha and other Buddhist stories depicted on the sculptures of Barabudur are not the imagination of the artists but based on the imagination of Sarvastivada and Vajrayana schools of Buddhism and are directly related to the ancient texts like Avadanas, Jatakas, Jatakamala, Gandavyuhastura, etc. A complete explanation of all that is depicted in this most splendid creation of Hindu-Javan culture was, therefore, not very easy, though efforts had been made since the beginning of the present century. It was possible thanks to the interest and enthusiasm of the then Government of the Netherlands. A complete series of photographs of the monument were made between 1907 and 1911. Then Koninklijk Institut vooi de Taat, Land-en Volkenkunde van Neder-Landsch-Indie was commissioned to publish the archaeological and architectural descriptions of Barabudur. The result of this project was the publication of a monograph in Dutch, in two volumes, the archaeological part by Nicholas Johannes Krom and the architectural part by T. Van Erp, with photographs in three big folios. The work well represents the quantity and quality of the subject it deals with. The author of the archaeological part has recorded all that is known about the significance of Barabudur and what could be gained from the original sources mentioned above. An English edition of the archaeological part, in very limited copies, was issued, in 1927, in two volumes with 442 plates of photographs which is long out of print. The present publication if an photographic reproduction of the 1927 English edition in its entirety of the text and the illustrations. CONTENT S:- 1. Foundation and history of Barabudur. 2. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. [8], 248, [1] p. Henri-Louis Bergson was one of the most famous and influential French philosophers of the late 19th century-early 20th century. Although his international fame reached cult-like heights during his lifetime, his influence decreased notably after the Second World War. While such French thinkers as Merleau-Ponty, Sartre, and Lévinas explicitly acknowledged his influence on their thought, it is generally agreed that it was Gilles Deleuze's 1966 Bergsonism that marked the reawakening of interest in Bergson's work. Deleuze realized that Bergson's most enduring contribution to philosophical thinking is his concept of multiplicity. Bergson's concept of multiplicity attempts to unify in a consistent way two contradictory features: heterogeneity and continuity. Many philosophers today think that this concept of multiplicity, despite its difficulty, is revolutionary. It is revolutionary because it opens the way to a re-conception of community. Especially for his intuition concept, his ideas were adopted by conservative philosophers and intellectuals of Turkey and the last Ottoman Empire. Halil Nimetullah Öztürk was a Turkish author and translator. He graduated from the Istanbul University Faculty of Law. He studied philosophy in Paris. In 1910, he became a lecturer in philosophy and theology at Darülfunun (Istanbul University)and became a professor in 1928. After the Turkish Letter Revolution in 1928, he published many reviews and articles on the purification of the Turkish language from foreign words. He worked on old texts in the TDK [Türk Dil Kurumu = i.e. Turkish Language Society]. First Edition in the Turkish literature. 2 vols., in 1, 8vo., First Edition; attractively bound in mid-nineteenth century half calf, marbled boards, gilt back, leather label lettered in gilt, a notably crisp, clean copy. SUPERIOR COPY IN PERIOD BINDING OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE WORK WHICH TRIGGERED LLORENTE'S BANISHMENT FROM FRANCE. Juan-Antonio Llorente (1756-1823), Spanish historian and chronicler of the Inquisition, was born at Rincon de Soto in Aragon and studied at the University of Saragossa. In 1782, following his ordination, he was appointed Vicar-General to the Bishop of Calahorra. In 1785 he became commissary of the Holy Office at Logrono and four years later its general secretary at Madrid. In the crisis of 1808 Llorente identified himself with the Bonapartists and was for some years employed in superintending the execution of the decree for the suppression of the monastic orders, and in examining the archives of the Inquisition. On the return of King Ferdinand VII to Spain in 1814, Llorente withdrew to France where he published his great 'Historia critica de la Inquisition de Espana' (Paris, 1815-1817). Translated into English, French, German, Dutch and Italian it attracted much attention in Europe, and involved its author in considerable persecution. This establishment opprobrium was strengthened by the publication of his 'Portraits Politique des Papes' in 1822 and he was ordered to leave France at the end of the year, dying in Madrid on 5th February 1823. Both the personal character and the literary accuracy of Llorente have been assailed, but although he was not an exact historian there is no doubt that he made valuable (and in many cases, unique) use of documents no longer extant. Languages: Latin, French.

Hardback, 672 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503040516. Ruusbroec puts the Netherlands on the map of worldliterature. His greatness as a mystic author has been acknowledged internationally. His work contains eleven treatises and eight letters. There have been two editions of his work so far: one by J.-B. David (1858-1868) and one by the Ruusbroecgenootschap (1932-1934). Neither of these editions meets the modern standards of a critical edition. Therefore a new edition was urgently needed. Of the ten volumes planned in this new edition, volumes five and six are the last to appear. The treatise Van den geesteliken tabernakel occupies a special place among Ruusbroec's works. It is not only the most extensive by far, but also the most complex on account of its intricate allegorical structure. Moreover, nowhere else is he so explicit about some points of his mystical doctrine. The Middle Dutch text is based on a critical study of all manuscripts. Besides the Middle Dutch text the edition contains a new American-English translation and the Latin translation by L. Surius O.Carth. (1552). The edition of the Middle Dutch text is critically reconstructive. The text is accompanied by a variant apparatus containing the variant readings of a limited number of selected manuscripts, paleographic annotations, an indication of the Scripture citations and of other sources and a textcritical commentary. The introduction sketches the historical circumstances in which the text originated and outlines its contents. Finally it gives information about the editorial principles and about the manuscripts which contain the text in question. Languages: Latin, English, Middle Dutch.
