31715Influential Congregational clergyman and author who co-edited "Christian Union" with Henry Ward Beecher and succeeded Beecher as pastor of Brooklyn's famed Plymouth Congregational Church. ANS 1p 5" X 8" Cornwall-on-Hudson NY n.y. 1878 November 25. Addressed to showman P.T. Barnum 1810-91. Very good. Lightly age toned. Intriguing if brief: "Your letter respecting Popular Amusements was received too late for this week's issue. It will go in next week & the papers shall be sent as requested." In Abbott's 1922 book "Silhouettes of My Contemporaries" he devotes a chapter to Barnum of whom he was a great admirer. In 1878 Abbott wrote Barnum requesting information about Tom Thumb and on 5 October 1878 received a cordial note in reply from Barnum. Meanwhile in the November 6th and 13th issues of "Christian Union" Reverend Samuel Scoville published a two-art article titled "The Christian View of Popular Amusements." Barnum took issue with some of this Congregationalist minister's views and in the December 4th issue his rebuttal titled simply "Popular Amusements" was published in "Christian Union." This letter then is the magazine's initial response to Barnum's reply to Scoville's criticisms. The article was republished a number of times in other publications and also found its way into Barnum's 1880 autobiography "Struggles and Triumphs; or Forty Years' Recollections. unknown
37206Few 19th century clergymen achieved the level of household-name fame and influence as this renowned Congregationalist minister the most fiery of the fire and brimstone preachers; the brother of writer Harriet Beecher Stowe of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" fame Beecher too was an outspoken social reformer abolitionist and lecturer whose oratory made him wildly popular; pastor of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn New York from 1847 on his meteoric popularity waned later in life only with a scandalous adultery charge brought against him. ANS 1p 4½" X 6" n.p. n.y. likely ca. 1880. Very good. Inoffensive mounting traces on verso. Arranges a meeting. In part: "I have put down in my book tuesday Decr 2d. for you. I shall leave N.Y. in the 8 o'clock a.m. train & stop at the Girard House. Unless sick I do not expect to miss a second time in one Season." Nicely penned. "Girard House" was a large and famous Philadelphia hotel. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved portrait heavy stock 5 3/4" X 9" engraved by J.C. Buttre of New York and titled "Eminent Opponents of the Slave Power" in ornate flowing type along the lower margin. Near fine. Fine head-and-shoulders portraits of 12 noted abolitionists each within a small oval border: John Quincy Adams at the top and beneath him the triumvirate of John Greenleaf Whittier Wendell Phillips and Charles Sumner; surrounding this quartette are clockwise from top William Lloyd Garrison Joshua R. Giddings Cassius M. Clay Benjamin Lundy Owen Lovejoy Gerrit Smith William Cullen Bryant and Henry Ward Beecher. A great pair. unknown
31627An interesting figure in the history of the Jewish society known as B'nai B'rith was this San Francisco businessman who served as grand secretary of their San Francisco headquarters for many years; when his real estate dealings failed and the grand lodge appeared to be missing a large amount of funds he committed suicide. ADS 1p 8" X 3¼" San Francisco CA 1893 March 28. Very good. Moderately age toned. "Received of Mr. R.C. Hallowell Thirty-Eight dollars in payment of moneys collected for my account" -- apparently a payment on an I.O.U. Boldly signed in full. Dated two years prior to his suicide this might well relate to the financial difficulties that ultimately ended up in Blank "borrowing" from his lodge and taking his life in despair. A San Francisco oddity. unknown
16586This Unitarian minister about whom little is known was an intimate of Emerson having served as best man at his wedding and friend of Thoreau and the Transcendentalists and for a time in the 1840s lived at their famed utopian community Brook Farm; one scholar describes him as "teacher thinker and friend of literary men." AQS 1p 10½" X 6 3/4" n.p. 1872 June 9. Very good. Very mild age toning and a few light spots of foxing. Handsomely penned in brown signed and dated at the close this unattributed stanza reads in full: "If once we knew his fertile gift could lend / With worthy verses I this page might fill / But since alas! no muse will me befriend / Instead of deed kindly accept the will." On heavy stock paper presumably from an autograph album. Most unusual and quite attractive. unknown
