22683Noted Presbyterian preacher and author affiliated with the Lafayette Avenue Church in Brooklyn New York. ALS 2pp 1st and 3rd leaves 5" X 8" Brooklyn NY 1865 November 27. Addressed to George May Powell. Very good. Powell a photographer had sent Cuyler a print of a large photo montage he was marketing "Being a group of Portraits of all those members of Congress who voted for the AMENDMENT of the CONSTITUTION PROHIBITING SLAVERY with those of President LINCOLN and Vice-President HAMLIN added." Cuyler's response is the "blurb" Powell had requested for use in a leaflet he was preparing advertising this photograph: "The likenesses are excellent; the idea is happy -- and the engraving ought to be on every loyal citizens' wall. 'Honor to whom honor is due'. And on that roll who deserve better from a grateful country than the Congress which put slavery into its charnel-house. It deserves a place beside my 'Emancipation Proclamation' of dear departed Lincoln." On the blank fourth leaf Cuyler adds and initials a sentiment: "Our temperance cause brightens. Lay hold & help. unknown
28476This American clergyman authored popular priestly potboilers such as his bestseller "The Redemption of David Corson." Small ALS 1p 4" X 5½" Westminster Park NY 1909 August 20. Addressed to C.T. Scott. Very good. Minor mounting traces on verso. "The publisher of my books Bobbs Merrill and Co. will probably have some picture or other that will be sufficient. May I refer you to them" Boldly signed in full. unknown
39651This Maine-born Congregationalist minister made his mark in Iowa where he spearheaded educational reform and became the first president of Grinnell College then Iowa College from 1865 to 1885. Intriguing if frustratingly cryptic closing portion of an ALS -- as is a fragmentary ANS 1p irregular 5¼" X 1 3/4" tipped to slightly larger sheet n.p. n.y. "1855" penned minutely in another hand along right border. Very good. Bold and attractive the top two lines are partial -- whole reads: "ing it & robbing us / it will be a favor to the illegible / Yours truly Geo. F. Magoun. / Mr Quinche comes from Columbian College D.C. unknown
19917The influential Church of England archdeacon converted to Catholicism in 1851 becoming Archbishop of Westminster in 1865 in which position he zealously promoted English Catholicism. Miniscule ALS 1p 3½" X 4½" London England 1864 October 12. Addressed to Mrs. Dickinson. Fine. At this time superior at the Oblatres of St. Charles in London which he founded in 1857 Manning asks a favor: "Will your kindness take me to the London Bridge Station tomorrow -- unless my hour is too late for you. I wish to leave here at 5 o'clock. I hope you are well: & have good news." Quite handsome little piece. unknown
26745English writer best known as an influential historian of Roman Catholicism in America on which topic he penned 27 volumes; also a poet and literary critic. Two items: First an ALS 1p 5" X 8" San Rafael CA 1923 March 11. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Near fine. Cordial note to an admirer: "I generally destroy published mss. but I do nothing systematically & a little search has brought this to light. You will find it among the Epitaphs in my book 'The Last Knight. This is the original and I fear illegible draft. I am not an American except by residence." Boldly signed with an initialed postscript. Second the aforementioned draft an AMS 1p 3½" X 8¼" n.p. n.y. Very good. On cheap lightly but evenly age toned stock Maynard pens quite a few lines in his incredibly miniscule script many of his letters are a mere 1/8th" tall many 1/16ths" tall. Titled "Epitaphs" the first example goes "of a philanthropist who after a long & useful life was impartially praised even by those newspapers which he did not own." Some deletions additions and corrections throughout. Signed 1¼" long at the conclusion. Accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown
40753Dean Stanley" was one of the leading and most prolific liberal Church of England theologians on 19th century England and served as Dean of Westminster from 1864 to 1881. Partial ANS 1p 4½" X 3½" n.p. n.y. Very good. Faintest of age toning; two faint vertical folds. Clipped portion of letter on pale blue stock. Below a few illegible works is a large bold wild educated guess "Yours truly" and "A.P. Stanley" followed by a dozen or so words on three lines that perhaps partially read: "The remuneration is 2£ a / week for copying &c 10" after which it's anyone's guess. Verso also bears 15 or so large words in Stanley's notorious hand some of which may read: "copy for the / place of." and "I can pay / to hear from you" -- or not. Incredibly this outlandishly illegible fragment is accompanied by a clipped late 19th century newspaper tidbit of the period 2 3/4" X 3¼" that describes this very document and the original recipient's experience in trying to transcribe it! Reads in full: "A correspondent of The Manchester Examiner says that he once received from Dean Stanley the most inscrutable epistle he ever beheld. It was written upon poor blue paper and in two kinds of ink the latter portion in black ink and the former in ink about the color of brown vinegar. The writing had a thin timid scratchy look and suggested the thought that it had been written with an old pen with only one prong or with the point of an old stocking-needle. There were no distinct letters as such but a series of nervous pecks at the paper with something smeared with ink. 'I tried over and over again for several days' says the correspondent 'to decipher the missive but to no purpose. I procured a magnifying glass and was simply dismayed at the result. I held it up to a strong gas-light and tried to read the front through the back and the back through the front. I tried to read it perpendicularly horizontally and from each of the four corners diagonally and at last flung myself full length upon the hearthrug and sought a friendly revelation from the glow of the fire but in vain. As a last resource I took it to a clever schoolmaster who after looking carefully over it from beginning to end somewhat discouraged me by asking me who it was from and what it was about. He labored at it more or less for five weeks and then gravely assured me that the man who could read such writing was not yet born.'" Describes this letter to a "T" and presumably written about this same example. An outrageously illegible example of this famously illegible script. unknown
19924Presbyterian clergyman who was cited for heresy in 1874 and became more popular thereafter. AQS 1p 5¼" X 2½" n.p. 1878 January 9. Very good. Minor mounting trace on verso. Bold "Great Truths heal the discords / which small ideas create" boldly penned in brown ink signed and dated. Attractive. unknown
21958Presbyterian clergyman who was cited for heresy in 1874 and became more popular thereafter. ANS 1p 5" X 6" Chicago IL 1884 May 19. Addressed to Mr. Mason. Very good. Mild age toning. On odd lined stationery imprinted with his 403 Superior Street address Swing notes "with a sad kind of interest the letter from Bateman. It is to be regretted that such a thoughtful scholar was called so soon from our country and his friends." Intriguing and cryptic. Bold and attractive. unknown
22632This memorable Presbyterian clergyman and educator in Chicago who was cited for some of his heretical forward-thinking beliefs in1874 was acquitted and resigned to found his own Central Church becoming more popular thereafter and publishing several books of his views. Choice content ALS 1p 5" X 8" n.p. n.d. Addressed to L.U. Fleckler. Very good. Mild age toning and inoffensive abrasion near top margin. Interesting reply seemingly penned shortly after the famed trial reading in part: ".superstition has caused more injury because it has been more universal and perpetual. Skepticism is of later times and has not affected the masses but superstition has had a wide sway always. Which will harm more the next hundred years I cannot state. I think skepticism will. Men will believe too little instead of too much." Nicely penned in brown ink. unknown
22654Considered one of the greatest preachers of his day this Episcopal clergyman served as rector of St. George's Church in New York City from 1845 to 1878; it is largely due to his efforts that Sunday Schools are such an integral part of American church life hence his moniker "The Champion of Sunday Schools." ALS 1p 7¼" X 9" New York NY 1848 April 17. Near fine. Nice note to an unnamed recipient handsomely penned: "I am gratified -- with the kindness shewed to me by an unknown member of your Board. My sincere wish is for the prosperity of your Society. My frequent prayer is for a blessing upon your churches. unknown

1970752481970. A binder of materials produced by the Awareness Research Foundation an alternative religious group founded in 1962 at a Thanksgiving dinner in Bellevue Washington. A psychologist placed under hypnosis cured his own cancer and through subsequent hypnotic trances revealed his expanding knowledge was a result of "cosmic awareness".<br /> <br /> The binder contains more than 150 pages of material organized within sections with a table of contents. The material includes an introduction to Awareness: "awareness in each individual which draws upon that portion of himself which is his inner superconscious power." Among the other material in the binder are a membership application an introduction to spiritual healing excerpts from readings in Olympia Washington and Calgary Alberta Canada etc.<br /> <br /> The executive director of the Foundation was Helen I. Hoag who claimed to have been aboard a spaceship and lived multiple past lives. "I'm Mara Menara professionally" Hoag wrote in the opening of her book My Lives on Atlantis a copy of which is laid into the binder. "My name in this life is Helen I. Hoag. Would you like to know some of my other names"<br /> <br /> Along with Hoag's book a 1971 letter is laid into the binder recounting Hoag's summer tour which took her to Oklahoma Texas New Mexico Arizona Utah and Colorado. "One of our contacts had already been taken to 'the other side'. We met some wonderful people evaluated several organizations ran several dozen lives for a number of persons in a great many cities and towns. We also saw from a distance some eight or nine space ships and were able to distinguish them from stars by their movement and lights. One of these was the Star Ship of our new Universe Lord which seems to stay over the vicinity of Minturn Colorado near Vail."<br /> <br /> It appears the organization moved from Washington to North Miami and during the summer months was based in Topeka Kansas. The materials are housed in a green stiff paper binder with metal clasps. unknown
