The book is in full morocco leather with gilt lettering and decorations on the all edges. The book is Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket but with a clamshell case. The leather binding is in clean bright condition. The inner rear hinge of the book cover has a bit of a gap. The text pages are generally clean and bright. The endpapers are of decorated paper. Page 95 had been torn out and been repaired. There are illustrations throughout the book and include both full page illustrations and decoration to three edges of each of the text pages. All three edges of the text block have gilding. A. E. G. . There is a previous owner's inked notation on the first free page. The slipcase is in Very Good- condition. The book and its contents are in generally clean bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping rubbing and fraying. The covers have some generalized ground-in dirt and rubbing. The text pages are generally clean but have noticeable spots of foxing throughout. The front endpaper includes a previous owner's inked name and address. "In November 1819 he started his first official teaching position at Fair Hill Boarding School in Montgomery County Maryland. In 1824 Hallowell opened a boarding school in Alexandria Virginia where his nephew Arthur Briggs Farquhar would later attend. His most famous student was Robert E. Lee who studied at the school for a month before entering West Point. Hallowell was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1854. On October 4 1859 Hallowell was appointed as the first president of the Maryland Agricultural College. He would only accept the appointment on condition that the College not use slaves and he would not accept a salary. He helped to develop the College's curriculum which included Ancient Languages Modern Languages Natural Sciences English and Mathematics.
