1823014135Burslem; Manchester: J. Tregortha; J. Gray & Company 1823. Book. Good. Hardcover. New and Improved Edition. 8vo. pp. 454 164 index 6 1 Directions to the Binder 1; 11 leaves of plates. The title to the first work continues ."Shewing their power and influence on the affairs of mankind with several extracts and original pices from the writings of the best authors. The whole designed to prevent infidelity shew the states of separate spirits and Evince the certainty of the World to Come. A new and improved edition." The first work is not dated but the second work is dated 1823 but both works were printed by J. Gleave the second work also published by Gleave. It would appear that these two works were designed to be bound together. The directions to the Binder lists 12 plates but only 11 are bound here - there is no evidence of a 12th ever having been bound in with no associated browning to neighbouring pages at the point it should have been bound in. Other copies we have located have also only had 11 plates. The binding whilst contemporary is poor; the front board is missing and the leather to the spine is chipped and loose the first couple of pages detached. It is in need of rebinding. The contents are good and complete but some pages are well thumbed and it would appear to be a well-read copy; occasional scattered foxing more or less throughout more pronounced to some pages; a couple of plates worn along the plate mark one with loss to the fore-edge margin but no affecting printed part. A few pages also chipped/torn to margins but not affecting text. A good copy in need of rebinding. J. Tregortha; J. Gray & Company Hardcover

Ex-library with spine label removed light bump to rear fore tail corner; exceedingly clean and sharp with sound binding and no evidence of use. Shipped professionally in a box. 'This book explores anti-Chalcedonian asceticism in Palestine an area that has so far been relatively neglected in academic studies. Anti-Chalcedonian asceticism in Palestine is significant because it was in Jerusalem in the middle of the 5th century that monks who opposed the Council of Chalcedon first attempted to establish a dissenting anti-Chalcedonian ecclesiastical hierarchy. The monk Peter the Iberian in particular was a key force in this project because of his high-level political connections to the members of the imperial court in Constantinople. The beginnings of anti-Chalcedonian history in Palestine constitute the fist tangible manifestation of the schism between the adherents and opponents of the Council of Chalcedon a schism which endures until today. This study also offers a further contribution in the field work carried out on site in the Middle East which traced the footsteps of Peter the Iberian and his followers into the regions of modern Israel Palestine Jordan Lebanon Turkey and Sinai/Egypt.'
