The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some bumping rubbing and edge wear. The text pages are generally clean and bright though there are spots of foxing throughout. There is a previous owner's inked name on the front endpaper. There is a black and white illustration of Marks as the frontispiece. <P> Starr. Baptist Bibliography #M2931 "David Marks November 4 1805 – 1845 was an American Baptist preacher. He was born in Shandaken Ulster County New York. At age 13 he set out on foot for Providence Rhode Island. He walked 368 miles before arriving at Brown University. However upon his arrival he was informed that tuition would be free but no other funds were available for boarding or clothing. He then walked 368 miles back home. On June 11 1819 he was baptized and became a member of the Freewill Baptist Church in Phelps. 1896A33525Notre Dame IN: The Ave Maria. Very Good. 1896. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. Signed by the author on an ALS letter that has been tipped-into the book. This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking the dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light rubbing bumping and wear. The text pages are generally clean and bright. The front inner hinge has cracked and the rear inner hinge has started. Tipped in is a small two page letter discussing Stoddard's intent to visit and desire to stay for dinner. "In 1864 he visited the South Sea Islands and there wrote his Idyls letters he sent to a friend who had them published in book form. "They are" wrote William Dean Howells "the lightest sweetest wildest freshest things that were ever written about the life of that summer ocean." He made four other trips to the South Sea Islands and wrote his impressions in Lazy Letters from Low Latitudes and The Island of Tranquil Delights. Stoddard visited Molokai several times and became well acquainted with Father Damiena Catholic saint since 2009who ministered to the lepers there. Stoddard's The Lepers of Molokai according to Robert Louis Stevenson did much to establish Father Damien's position in public esteem. In 1867 soon after his first visit to the South Sea Islands Stoddard was received into the Catholic Church. He told the story of his conversion in a small book A Troubled Heart and How it was Comforted of which he said: "Here you have my inner life all laid bare." " ; Signed by Author . Leather at joints is supple not dry and cracked. Covers have some wear a little bumping to corners and the spine label is about 50% lacking. Text clean with a touch of foxing. A bit worn some red pen underlining and scant black pen notations stain to fore edge owner's label to title page. Quite scarce with only 6 library holdings recored in OCLC. 'Some of the greatest Christian prose poetry and music can be found in the worship services of Holy Week for the betrayal suffering death and resurrection of Our Lord has always inspired men to create the best. This Service Book contains many beautiful thoughts which tell tell the deep insight that the Syrian people have about their Savior His love for them and the terrible humiliation which He allowed to befall Himself so that mankind could be reconciled to the Father. It is a beautiful expression of a Christian culture which is neither Latin nor Greek but belongs to the ancient Semitic world. Today it is used in the Jacobite and Syrian Catholic Churches which are found mainly in the Near East and India. The style of these prayers is simple and direct very biblical in their orientation and devoid of any later western philosophical thought. It is meant to give voice to the cry that is in the hearts of the people a simple cry of love repeated time and again as the worshipper is struck by the vision or concept of the glorious transcendence of God now being abused. 181770315030270R Storr Grantham; sold by Baldwin Cradock and Joy London Grantham 1817. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. The author Rev William Dodwell died in July 1824 at Grantham in the county of Lincolnshire aged 72 years he was the Rector of Welby and Stoke Rochford in the same county. A few months previously to his death he gave Ten Thousand Pounds to the Wesleyan Missionary Society and bequeathed the principal part of his property to charitable purposes including the funding of the education of 6 boys and 6 girls who are educated from the age of 6 to 12 years and the dividends of £1608 to care for the parish poor of Stoke Rochford North Stoke and South Stoke and Welby near Grantham. This is probably a late 19th Century rebind/recover with black corners and spine there is a small area of surface loss at the bottom of the spine firm marked brown boards sound binding. The title page has two signature and the word "Stoke"inscribed on it. The final page page 353/4 has a pasted paper repair to the margin - the text is not affected.
