171945476Lisboa occidental Lisbon: Officina de Pascoal da Sylva. 1719. Second Edition. Vellum. Good. 12mo; 19 f 522 & 6 f pages; Text in Portuguese. M. DCCXIX. 1719 "Com todas as licenças necessarias." 12mo. signatures A-Z-12 Aa-10. 19 ff 522 & 6 ff. index. Contemporary limp vellum. Text block very nearly detached from the binding the connection is now dependent on a bit of sewing at the lower headband. Two short clusters of leaves with minor worm tracks. Lacks two leaves -- R2 and almost all of leaf Aa2 of which just an upper corner remains. Rare. Not in OCLC. The author Francisco de Mattos was born in 1636 in Lisbon where he entered the Jesuit order in 1652. He traveled to the Northeast of Brazil to make his noviciate in Bahia -- returned to Portugal where Padre Mattos served as Procurador-general for the S.J. Upon his return to Brazil Padre Mattos became rector of the Jesuit colleges at Rio de Janeiro and Bahia. He became Provincial Professor of the humanities philosophy and theology and died in Bahia in 1720. This rare little book seems to be a second edition of these "meditações". BLPL cites an edition of this title published in 1717 at the printing office Universidade Évora Portugal. Moraes also describes a more substantial work by Padre Francisco de Mattos -- a chronological biography of the founder of his order published the previous year with an imprint identical to our work printed by Pascoal da Sylva in Lisboa occidental. see Vida chronologica de S. Ignacio de Loyola fundador da Companhia de Jesus offerecida ao Illistrissimo Senhor Arcebispo da Bahia . This is a rare contribution to Brazilian literature in every respect save for the formal location in Lisbon of its printer. Printing in Brazil did not begin formally for nearly another 90 years after this little volume was printed. . Officina de Pascoal da Sylva hardcover

Sorge describes in depth the following Cossack arms: a 15 ft. sharpened iron rod two pistols a musket sabre wide knife whip and more. Delaine was a civil rights leader and minister at the Greater St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lake City South Carolina after transferring from Pine Grove A.M.E. Church in Summerton South Carolina where he worked on the Briggs v. Elliott desegregation case in 1950-1 and though ruled against in Charleston it would be the first of five cases appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court that ultimately led to Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954.
DeLaine was under constant harassment during his ministry work in Clarendon County and then Lake City following the Brown v. Board of Education case with abject neglect from local law enforcement given the documented threats and evidence to support his endangerment.
The cover photo of this pamphlet shows DeLaine and his family standing atop the remnants of their Summerton home that burned down while the fire department watched in 1950 an event that led to his transfer.
Following the landmark Supreme Court ruling on October 6 1955 The Greater St. James Church was burned to the ground. The following day shots were fired on DeLaine's home from a car to which he responded with reciprocal gunfire receiving a warrant for his arrest as the 4 white passengers and driver of the instigating car were declared innocent. DeLaine fled and was reported missing as of October 11 1955 having fled the state's unjust assault and battery charges for which he wouldn't receive a federal fugitive warrant from Eisenhower in the following months of the same year and would continue to evade South Carolina extradition. Four decades later he was pardoned in the year 2000.
After leaving Lake City in October 1955 DeLaine went to New York City and then onto Buffalo where he would establish a new A.M.E. Church.
This scarce pamphlet documents the work of DeLaine Levi Pearsons Harry Briggs the NAACP and others in the Clarendon County school case of 1950 and fellow cases which would support the Brown v. Born at Tycanol farm in the parish of Pontfaen in 1867. As a boy he was known simply as William Morris and it is not clear when or why he adopted the additional middle name Meredith. He attended the local village school in Cwm Gwaun until the age of twelve and the grammar school in Haverfordwest until he was nearly sixteen. The family were members of Jabez Baptist Chapel in Cwm Gwaun. After finishing school he returned home working on the farm and began preaching. At the age of seventeen he began to preach locally with a view to training for the ministry and was invited to preach at Jabez. He was accepted as a candidate for the ministry preaching in a number of local chapels in order to have his application countersigned by three other ministers. In 1887 was admitted to the Baptist College in Haverfordwest and then University College in Aberystwyth. He subsequently settled in south Pembrokeshire as the minister of Pisgah Baptist Chapel Cresswell Quay and married a local girl Mary Phillips. After three years he left the Baptists and was accepted into the ministry of the Anglican Church leaving Pembrokeshire to spend the rest of his life working in Glamorgan. He was curate at Treherbert from 1895 to 1899 at Llangynwyd from 1899 to 1908 and finally vicar of Clydach Vale where he remained until his death in 1921. He is perhaps best known for his books on violins and violin-making 1904 1920. Chatto & Windus hardcover
