183421190881834. London: Edward Bull. 1834. 8vo. Original pictorial full olive morocco gilt edges; pp. viii 254 2 advertisements 25 steel-engraved plates on mounted India after William Daniell; a little wear to extremities front cover with old repair to scratch light marginal browning to plates; otherwise very good. First edition extremely rare large paper copy of the first annual in this series which was to be continued up to 1840. The fashionable preacher and writer William Caunter was fascinated by India and wrote this mix of information and entertainment probably for the family members who had remained in Britain and where not over in India. Daniell's contributions make this a very handsome publication on India under the Raj. The normal format measures just over 20 by 14 cm wereas this issue measures over 24 by 16 cm. This issue is on better velin paper and the engravings - not foxed as often - are on mounted India paper with tissue guards. This annual appeared between 1834 and 1840 8 volumes with two volumes dated 1839 as a gift book for British people who had members of their family serving in India. unknown
1834144062London: Edward Bull 1834. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London Edward Bull 1834. Octavo viii 254 2 publisher's advertisements pages plus 25 steel-engraved plates including the additional engraved title after drawings by William Daniell. Original full olive morocco elaborately blocked in gilt and blind; all edges gilt; leather lightly scuffed and a little rubbed at the extremities with the spine lightly sunned; plates and adjacent leaves foxed as often; stitching slightly shaken; tiny area of loss in the gutter of three consecutive leaves I1-3 a trifling production flaw; a few other minor signs of age and handling; some tissue-guards missing but no bad thing as those that remain are foxed; a very good copy in an impressive publisher's binding of the period. The first volume of this lavish illustrated annual which incorporates a fictionalised travelogue of a journey through India descriptions of important landmarks and short histories and biographies. Publication ceased after the 1840 issue.
Daniell's drawings date from his travels in India in the 1780s and 1790s and Caunter's text may also be in part a sensationalised version of Daniell's journal see 'Bengal Past and Present' Volume 25 1923.
Faxon: 'Literary Annuals and Gift-Books' 1655. 16764401855London: R. Royston 1676. Preliminaries thumbed a bit foxed and a few scattered stains; binding scuffed and worn at extremities with some loss of the headband rear board stained. Folio with a frontispiece and double page 'Tree of Faith' plate trimmed and mounted on plain paper several other cuts in the text title-page printed in black and red; contemporary English crimson calf gilt unlettered spine with ornately gilt-decorated panels between raised bands.

The second of several editions of this history of the early church illustrated with remarkable cuts depicting the apostles persecuted in all manner of ways including crucifixion immolation and the dreaded 'cauldron of boyling oyl'. Each apostle is awarded a separate chapter and is depicted both beatified and under duress. William Cave 1637-1713 was a minister and scholar of Church history who took his Doctor of Divinity at Cambridge before serving as vicar of Islington and later in London. He was chaplain to Charles II and Canon of Windsor. Cave's primary area of expertise was the early history of the Church and following the structure of Eusebius of Caesarea he weaves the lives of the apostles into a close narrative that illuminates arcane early theology for his reader successfully making the early history of the Church accessible to a wider audience: 'what is significant about Cave's writings is that they follow the tradition of Christian bio-bibliography that in late antiquity and into the medieval period had such a long and rich history and which was revived in the Reformation. Cave's works provide valuable evidence for the interest in patristic scholarship at the end of the seventeenth century.' ODB.

. Provenance: Early signature of Elizabeth Wyndham; from the library of Chillingham Castle Northumberland spruiked today as "Britain's most haunted historic castle" with old label to the front endpaper; ownership inscription on title of "Cam. Tankerville 1727" Chillingham was the family seat of the Earls of Tankerville; from 1674 to 1931 the seven successive earls were all named Charles Bennet. R. Royston unknown
