Queste 100 stampe sono state tutte estratte dalle molte migliaia presenti nell'inventario della <strong>Howard Greenberg Gallery</strong>. Westerbeck è stato particolarmente attratto dall'ampio gusto di Greenberg per la fotografia americana ed europea del XX secolo. Il libro che ne è scaturito porta il nome di A Democracy of Imagery Una democrazia dell'immagine perché Westerbeck ritiene che tutte le opere in esso contenute debbano essere considerate uguali. Vila Nova de Gaia 1828 - Porto 1918 foi um grande jornalista político intelectual católico e bibliófilo que reuniu a mais valiosa das livrarias em Portugal.</p>_x000d_<p>Liberal combativo e católico militante filho do Tenente-General Francisco de Paula de Azeredo Figueira de Carvalho liberal militante após a revolta de Aveiro e do Porto de 16 de Maio de 1828 teve que escapar para o estrangeiro. A mãe Maria do Carmo de Lemos Teixeira de Aguilar uma senhora da nobreza rural conheceu na carne a radicalização da intolerância política visto que na ausência do marido exilado deu à luz o seu filho numa quinta perto de Vila Nova de Gaia onde se acolhera. O pai só pôde ver o filho no final de 1829 quando Dona Maria do Carmo se juntou ao marido em Bruges.</p>_x000d_<p>Regressados a Portugal após a vitória final do Liberalismo Francisco de Azeredo foi aluno de Joaquim Ramalho Ortigão no Colégio da Irmandade da Lapa prosseguindo depois os estudos no Liceu de Lisboa. A experiência no estrangeiro nos primeiros anos de vida o convívio com o pai e a sua própria reflexão sobre o que via e ouvia mostraram-lhe que a vida obriga a opções fundamentais e que é imperioso agir segundo a própria consciência. Também muito cedo terá compatibilizado no seu espírito a defesa das liberdades constitucionais com a crença católica.</p>_x000d_<p>Cursou a Universidade de Coimbra nas Faculdades de Matemática e Filosofia e ingressou na carreira das armas frequentando o curso de Engenharia Militar e Civil da Escola do Exército em Lisboa. Em 1851 foi eleito deputado por Lamego iniciando então um longo ciclo dedicado à atividade política.</p>_x000d_<p>À cultura portuguesa prestou relevantíssimos serviços não apenas como autor de livros mas também como jornalista católico em vários periódicos mas especialmente no jornal «A Palavra» no qual entre 1872 e 1910 assinou centenas de artigos. Os sucessivos mandatos como Provedor da Misericórdia em épocas de grande aperto económico do país lograram a saúde financeira da instituição e contribuíram para a tomada de consciência da vocação unitária e corporativa dos diversos estabelecimentos da Santa Casa.</p>_x000d_<p>O Conde de Samodães era um exímio poliglota exprimindo-se fluentemente em seis idiomas para além do latim e de boas noções de hebreu grego e árabe. Tal desenvoltura linguística foi-lhe útil como tradutor mais de uma dezena de títulos mas também como homem de negócios visto que foi fundador e director da Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte.</p>_x000d_<p>Foi condecorado pelos governos de Espanha e de França. In that long life he spent 10 years working for the Church Missionary Society in China. He and his family returned to England wherehe had a number of posts ending with Surrogate and Rural Dean in 1873 and Prebend of Hereford Cathedral in 1885.
