A very smart second edition set of these eighteenth-century topographical works about Wales written by Reverend Richard Warner. A set of topographical and local interest works regarding South Wales and the Southwest of England. Including A Walk Through Wales published in 1798 and A Second Walk Through Wales published in 1799. Both written and published by Reverend Richard Warner 1763-1857 an English clergyman and antiquarian who wrote many topographical works during his lifetime. Including a frontispiece to each volume and in-text illustrations. Containing the bookplates of Harold E. Matthews and John Phillips Esq. of Edstone to the front pastedowns of each volume. This copy came from the library at Julians Park Hertfordshire the previous home of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie 1902-1968. She was an English socialite and through her mother was the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. Uniformly bound in half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally smart with some rubbing to the joints spines and extremities of each volume. Bookplates of previous owners to the front pastedowns of each volume. Internally front hinges to both volumes strained but firm. Both volumes firmly bound. Some offsetting to the first few pages of each volume otherwise pages are generally clean. Edges a bit rubbed and bumped and small amount of chipping to the edges of the label not affecting the lettering but generally a very good copy. Printed by R. Cruttwell, Bath, and sold by G. Richard Warner 1763–1857 was an English clergyman and writer of a considerable number of topographical books based on his walks and his interest in antiquarianism. In August 1796 Warner went on holiday to Wales walking an average 26 miles a day and recorded his travels in letters that were later published. Begins ‘M. L’abbe Rose Abbé Rose Abbé Elzéar-Véran Rose 1790-1878 Curé de Lapalud historian and medievalistCure de Lapalud Presente ses Respects’ but the name of the recipient is indecipherable. Rose is displeased that he was unable to meet him and reports that he left in good health at Avignon. He ends with the name of an individual again uncertain but a ‘deputé de La Marne’ at whose house he is lodging. No date or place. unknown
