Each leaf contains a tipped in color print by Raban in the classic style with English text in a gilt Bezalel style frame on the facing page. Title translates as, "Chagaynu. Our Holidays: A Picture Book Drawn by Z. Raban of the Bezalel Srt school, Jerusalem." Chagaynu (meaning Our Holidays) is a beautiful picture book drawn by Zeev Raban of the Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem. The book includes 14 plates featuring gorgeous color illustrations by Raban, all showing Jewish holidays throughout the year. Each illustration includes with it a poem by Israeli children's author and poet Levin Kipnis ("Avi-Shai"). Each color plate is protect by tissue guards. Text in Hebrew. Raban, the artist, is regarded as a leading member of the Bezalel school art style, in which artists portrayed both Biblical and Zionist themes in a style influenced by the European Jugendstil (similar to Art Nouveau) and by traditional Persian and Syrian styles. Last 4 pages contain sheet music. Title translates as: Haggadah, or Ceremonies for the First Two Nights of Passover, according to the Rites of the German and Portuguese Israelites. Written by L. Blum, revised and corrected by Lazare Wogue (18171897) : a French rabbi, scholar, and journalist, born in Fontainebleau, was ordained in 1843 at the École Centrale Rabbinique in Metz. In 1851 he began to teach German and theology there (in 1859 it became the Séminaire Israélite de France and was transferred to Paris) , retaining his two chairs until his retirement in 1894. From 1868 Wogue was also director of the talmud torah of the Séminaire Israélite. The most important of his many scholarly works is a translation of the Pentateuch with commentaries (186069) , which is the one used in the Bible du Rabbinat edited by Z. Kahn. Among his other publications are Le Rabbinat Français au XIXe siècle (1843) , Le Guide du Croyant Israélite (1857, 18982) , Histoire de la Bible et de l'Exégèse biblique jusqu'à nos jours (1881) , a French translation (1882) of the first two volumes of Geschichte der Juden by H. Graetz, Esquisse d'une théologie juive (1887) , and La Prédication Israélite en France (1890) . He also translated various Hebrew works. Among the manuscripts he left is a tract on theology. Later Blue Boards with Original Paper Wrappers bound inside. 8vo. 104 pages; 19 cm. In Hebrew with title page in Italian. Title translates to Form of the Prayers According to the Italian Custom. The customs and religious rites of the Italian-rite Jews can be seen as a bridge between the Ashkenazi and Sephardi traditions, showing similarities to both; they are closer still to the customs of the Romaniotes (native Greek Jews) . A sub-division is recognised between minhag Bene Romi, practiced in Rome, and minhag Italiani, practised in northern cities such as Turin, though the two rites are generally close. In matters of religious law, Italian-rite Jews generally follow the same rules as the Sephardim, in that they accept the authority of Isaac Alfasi and the Shulchan Aruch as opposed to the Ashkenazi customs codified by Moses Isserles (the Rema) . However their liturgy is different from that of both of these groups. One reason for this may be that Italy was the main centre of early Jewish printing, enabling Italian Jews to preserve their own traditions when most other communities had to opt for a standard Sephardi or Ashkenazi prayer-book. It is often claimed that the Italian prayer-book contains the last remnants of the Judaean/Galilaean Jewish tradition, while both the Sephardi and, to a lesser extent, the Ashkenazi rites reflect the Babylonian tradition (Wikipedia 2017) . Benjamin Szold was a Hungarian-born rabbi who became rabbi to Congregation Oheb Shalom in Baltimore. "Oheb Shalom was then on the verge of becoming Reform, but Szold led it to a Judaism which allowed for innovations in ritual practice, but not in basic tenets. He recognized and employed the educational potential of the regular Sabbath sermon. He introduced his own prayer book, Avodat Yisrael (1867) , to replace the previously used Minhag Amerikah (1857) by I. M. Wise, and the traditional siddur. The Avodat Yisrael was widely adopted by congregations throughout the country. Under Szold's leadership Oheb Shalom became one of the foremost American congregations. " (Gladys Rosen, EJ) Marcus Jastrow was a Polish-born rabbi and author who emigrated to the United States and became rabbi to Rodeph Shalom, a congregation in Philadelphia largely composed of German immigrants. Contains discussion of the significance and laws of the Feast, the Kindling of the Lights, and contains Hebrew passages from Talmud, Midrash, and Maimonides. With discussion of the celebration of the feast in Eretz Israel. Bachad was a religious Zionist youth movement in pre-war Germany called Brit Chalutzim Datiim which shortened its name to its initial letters Bachad. Its members prepared themselves for Aliya. A group of them came over to England among the refugees who were permitted to enter this country in the years immediately before the war. They were accommodated in a castle in Wales [Gwrych Castle] and set up Hachshara centres in Bromsgrove and other places, as well as a Merkaz Limmud in Manchester to which members came from the Hachsharah centres for periods of three or six months for intensive Jewish studies. Later on a farm was bought at Thaxted in Essex which became not only a model Hachsharah centre but very quickly a successful agricultural venture which at one time won first prize for having the best milk yielding cow in Essex!
