The beautiful woodcut border shown in Johannes Luther plate 53 shows the fall and redemption: Adam and Eve at the tree of wisdom eating apples that the serpent offers them. What follows is the drastic expulsion from paradise by horned devils and the severe lords Moses and Aaron who reproachfully show the tablets of the law with the ten commandments. On the right then the crucifixion of Christ who takes away the sins again and below the risen one who defeats the devil with a large spear Moses' tablets of the law also break - an allusion to the time of the New Covenant "Sub gratia" which replaces the "tempus sub lege" the Old Testament covenant of man with God.<BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> Hans Weiss was the first printer in Berlin in 1540. Er bezieht . hier eindeutig Stellung und legt nochmals den Unterschied zwischen der Messe und dem Sakrament dar.» Kocher-Benzing. - Die schöne Titeleinfassung zeigt den guten Hirten und weist in Medaillons die Initialen von Martin Luther Philipp Melanchthon Justus Jonas Caspar Cruciger und Johannes Bugenhagen auf. Sie wurde einst als ein Werk Cranachs angesehen dann auch Georg Lemberger um 1495 um 1540 der für Lufft arbeitete zugeschrieben wie ein hs. Eintrag eines Vorbesitzers nahe legt. Kocher-Benzing nennt H. Zimmermann Buchillustr. S. 72 der ihn dem Monogrammisten MS dem Illustrator der ersten Lutherbibel von 1524 zuschreibt. In dieser bedeutsamen Schrift zur Abendmahlslehre verkündet Luther das Heilsgut, dem die Gläubigen im Abendmahl teilhaftig werden. Es habe dreierlei Form: Das Zeichen (Brot und Wein), die Bedeutung (Gemeinschaft der Heiligen) und den Glauben. Er fordert, daß diese Sakramente nicht nur den Priestern, sondern allen Gläubigen zustehen. - Im Anhang stellt sich Luther der Unsitte der Bruderschaften entgegen, die sich, wie etwa einzelne Handwerkszünfte, unter das Patronat eines Heiligen stellen, aber meist unter diesem Deckmantel kein frommes, sondern ein sehr ausschweifendes Leben führen. - Der Titelholzschnitt zeigt eine prächtige Monstranz. - In guter Gesamterhaltung.

"As early as March 28 1522 in a letter to Johannes Lange Luther had expressed his intention to write a letter ad Erphordiensem ecclesiam when he found time . this time it was of value to him to address an entire congregation 'gathered in God' . That he in his complaint about those who give cause for rebellion and about the 'ambitious oddballs' who think they are not really preachers if they did not go beyond the simple simplicity of Christ's preaching also some of his Erfurter wanted to meet followers can be clearly read out. The admonition not to start anything in the dark but to leave everything to God in prayer is reminiscent of what is said in the eight sermons and 'of both forms of the sacrament'; here too we speak with moral seriousness about sparing the weak. Small worm-tract affecting last 20 leaves internally generally fine. 10 367 pp. <br/><br/><em>Rare first printing of Martin Luther's early letters from 1507 to 1522 spanning the years from the celebration of his first Mass to his removal to Wartburg Castle after the Diet of Worms. Among them is a notable letter Cardinal Albrecht Archbishop of Magdeberg and Mainz accompanying a copy of the 95 Theses composed on the very day October 31st 1517 when Luther affixed the Theses to the door of the church in Wittenberg and Luther's first letter to Erasmus penned on March 28th 1519. These letters provide a most interesting perspective into Martin Luther's personal and public reflections on crucial aspects of the early days of the Reformation. The collection encompasses correspondence with figures such as Emperor Charles V Pope Leo X King Henry VIII Georg Spalatin Philip Melanchthon Frederick Elector of Saxony Andreas Karlstadt Cardinal Tommaso de Vio Cajetan and many others. The present work was edited by Joannes Aurifaber 1519-1575 Luther’s private secretary who lived with Luther at the time of his death: “Joannes Vinariensis; 1519–1575 was born in the county of Mansfeldt in 1519. He studied at Wittenberg where he heard the lectures of Luther and afterwards became tutor to Count Mansfeldt. In the war of 1544–45 he accompanied the army as field-preacher and then lived with Luther as his famulus or private secretary being present at his death in 1546. In the following year he spent six months in prison with John Frederick elector of Saxony who had been captured by the emperor Charles V. He held for some years the office of court-preacher at Weimar but owing to theological disputes was compelled to resign this office in 1561. In 1566 he was appointed to the Lutheran church at Erfurt and there remained till his death in November 1575. Besides taking a share in the first collected or Jena edition of Luther’s works 1556 Aurifaber sought out and published at Eisleben in 1564–1565 several writings not included in that edition. He also published Luther’s Letters 1556 1565 and Table Talk 1566. This popular work which has given him most of his fame is unfortunately but a second or third hand compilation.†Encyclopedia Britannica. Theologische Programmschrift des Reformators und Luther-Mitstreiters Johann Timann (1499 - 1557). Der in Amsterdam geborene Timann mußte 1522 mit den holländischen Augustinern seine Heimat verlassen und gelangte nach Wittenberg, wo er Martin Luther und Philipp Melanchthon kennenlernte, mit denen er künftig eng zusammenwirken sollte. Timann wandte sich nach Bremen, wo er gemeinsam mit dem Augustinermönch Jacob Probst, der sich ebenfalls in Wittenberg aufgehalten hatte, an die Spitze der reformatorischen Bewegung trat. 1534 hatte er wesentlichen Anteil an der Ausarbeitung der Bremer Kirchenordnung, die von Luther und dessen Mitstreiter Johannes Bugenhagen abgesegnet wurde. Timann trat ferner in der Auseinandersetzung mit der radikalreformatorischen Täuferbewegung hervor. So vertrat er die Stadt Bremen auf dem Hamburger Konvent vom 15. April 1535, wo scharfe Maßnahmen gegen die Täufer beschlossen wurden. Ebenso nahm Timann als bremischer Abgeordneter 1537 gemeinsam mit Luther und Melanchthon am Fürstentag in Schmalkalden und an den Religionsgesprächen in Worms und Regensburg 1540 und 1541 teil, wodurch er seinen Ruf als Theologe über Bremen hinaus festigte. Timann, der in enger Verbindung mit Luther eine Reihe theologischer Schriften verfaßte, kann als einer der führenden reformierten Theologen der norddeutschen Region gelten.
